I want to stay in the games industry so bad

| Got laid off from my job as a game programmer. I don't hold it against my studio because things are tough for them but man, it's tough everywhere. I keep hearing about big studios laying off hundreds and smaller studios having trouble with funding.

When I finished college I thought I'd just do gamedev as a hobby, but after somehow landing a full-time job as a game programmer I realised I actually love doing this. But ughh, the industry is so unstable and the pay so limited.

| I miss the punk ethos of the 90s and 2000s industry before it became a corporate metagrinder filled with out of touch suits.

I long for the days of core, Id, classic squaresoft, Psygnosis, pandemic, free radical design, Sierra Entertainment.

Fuck Microsoft, ea, ubisoft, square enix, Activision Blizzard, epic and all the other scumfucks that ripped the arse out of the industry.

| Honestly op lots of people in the industry leave and do it as a hobby that's why there's so many indie games

Yeah but, do you know how much effort is needed to make a game? Do you how hard it is doing it as a side thing while also having a full-time job? It's also hard to do it without a team, and it's a lot harder to have a team without paying them.

Idk, I still wanna do this full-time... But if I can't get a decent job here I guess I'll take what I can get.

(am op btw)

It's either that or learn how to do something that makes you indispensable so you can get into a position you won't lose. If you're the only person who knows how to do a specific thing, especially if you can do it well and no one else wants to, you'll basically be set. I don't know enough about programming to say what that might be, but you might be able to think of something.

| Abused dog mentality

Did you finish a college as a game programmer specifically? Or as a software engineer/etc?

Haha no, I studied politics in college. Not something I want to do for a living.

I did have personal projects I put into my portfolio when I applied to the studio. Plenty of my coworkers didn't have a related degree too.
