>>978921 Yes? My generation don't really play Minecraft, definitely not to the extent op have. And I think the kids spend more time in Roblox or Fortnite or something.
Might vary by region too of course. I'm just throwing a wild guess.

I mean... if we're just talking pure reasons as to why minecraft, its prob cuz its just that popular and generally known that any friend group can pretty easily bond over it as a common ground. Hard to find someone who DOESN'T know minecraft after all in this day and age.
Even putting aside the common knowledge part, its also ridiculously accessible, with ways to easily get a (not-so-legal) copy and even free online servers, so its just far easier to setup for friends.

As for multiplayer games that work for a bunch of people in different investment levels in games, I'm thinking games like Roblox (yes, unironically) is a good start because its free and lightweight (no huge barrier of entry for anyone like game prices or hardware power) and theres such a big library of user-made games that you can probably find something everyone can find common ground in enjoying (I recommend checking out NeonKnights or Phantom Forces for starters)

Minecraft is a good game it's constantly updated, and has tons of mods so my friend groups go in loops of
Play, burn out, wait a year, oh that looks cool (update/mod), repeat

Minecraft is super popular, super fun, and super easy to either set up/pay for a private multiplayer server.

Our friendgroup unexpectedly had a minecraft server and we have a lot of good memories with it. It's unexpected because everyone trashed minecraft before we tried it and found out that the game is actually kinda fun to play. We spent like 3 years on it before we went back to competetive first person shooters but I get the feeling that some people never would've gone out of their comfort zones to play Divinity 2 or Stardew Valley if it wasn't for that server.

Videogames in general are still considered very nerdy things. Unless it's super popular like MC or LOL, I find it's hard to find irl friends with tastes for those thousand of little gems in whole game industry... Also it's hard to make them sticked with something new unless it's the hype of the moment but then again it burns out quickly too.
