What 2023 JRPGs can I look forward to? I haven't enjoyed the new games lately.

I love the genre, especially with games like Bravely Default, Lost Odyssey, and of course the Dragon Quest and (older) Final Fantasy games.
But I don't like the recent JRPGs. That includes Tales of Arise, Persona 5, and the Xenoblade Chronicles series. I don't even want to go near Trails because of the art style.
I want to be excited for new JRPGs again but what's on the horizon? I just know DQ12 is confirmed.

JRPGs were never good.

Have you played Triangle Strategy or DioField Chronicles? The Live-A-Life remake? There's also Eiyuden Chronicles coming up. And what do you feel about something lighter like Dungeon Encounters or Voice of Cards?
Is there anything specific about Xenoblade/Tales/Trails/Persona you don't like? Or is it just the art style/general vibe?

There's also the two new games by the directors of Wild Arms and Shadow Hearts coming at some point, and Sea Of Stars.

>>893785 I did not count strategy RPGs as JRPGs. Just the usual adventuring variety.
I have not yet played Live-A-Live, but I know it's a remaster/remake so it's not new.
As for what I did not like, I really dislike that they have more annoying filler than classic JRPGs, have too much exposition that treats people like idiots, and the mainstream anime art styles turn me off. I don't know what Trails is like as a game, but I don't want to look at its visuals for dozens of hours.

>>893785 I don't know what Dungeon Encounters is, but Voice Of Cards is okay. Not what I'm looking for, especially when I'd rather see the characters and world brought to life than imagine with cards.

>>893800 Dungeon Encounters is like super barebones JRPG, just battles and a maze. If even Voice of Cards is too barebones for you it's probably not what you want, eh.
>>893789 Trails is pretty much the same. It's got lots of character banters (which is probably what you read as fillers).
And you should give those strategy JRPG a look. The battle mechanics aside, they'll probably suits you.

Lemme think... Harvestella's coming up, but might not be "JRPG" enough. FFXVI seems to be a departure from the recent Final Fantasies, but who knows when that's coming out. Soul Hackers 2 was just released, but it's the same vibes as Persona. Valkyrie Elysium, maybe?

>>893803 When I say filler, I mean the parts that pad out the play time longer than it needs to.
This includes cutscenes that don't tell the story concisely, environments that overstay their welcome, recycling the same enemies too much, cutscenes explaining stuff for minutes that we could figure out in seconds anyway, etc.

>>893804 I'm very hesitant to count action RPGs. Mentioning Tales was already pushing it. I very much prefer RPG battles where I'm managing tanks, healers, buffs/debuffs, and DPS accordingly instead of mashing the attack button. I don't want a beat 'em up with numbers flying around.

Soul Hackers 2 looks yucky btw. I hate its modern Persona vibes. They should've brought back the old SMT art style.

Op I'm with you. I'm not sure when jrpgs started to stray but FF is the only one I still give a chance. My heart is barely in those.
I'm betting there's a lot of indies out there but it would require knowing japanese to unearth.
From my experience devs have shit jobs over here and the only projects consistently hiring are dumb fucking gacha rpgs

>>893963 Atelier is basically JRPG Filler: The Game. Excellent if that's what you want, but op better not touch them with a ten-foot pole.

Octopath Traveler II was just announced! And Harvestella is looking less farming sim and more old-school RPG than I expected.
