Disclaimer: I don't care what you think about Nintendo as a whole or their business practices. That's not what this thread is about.
So, this is something that's confused me for a long time and I can't get it out of my head so I'll drop it here.
Nintendo, when it comes to LGBT stuff, confuses me to no end. I can never tell if they support it, or despise it, or both, or if they support it but whoever's above them don't, or if it's the other way around. I'm so fucking confused.

Reason for why: Nintendo has had gay characters and trans characters and stuff in their games. I think non-binary characters as well and they also have trans flag themed costumes in stuff like Smash.
But they also banned trans flags from Smash online stuff (which is a game that already has trans flag stuff in it?) and in some games they don't allow same sex relationships and marriage but in some they do and their social media stuff sometimes supports it but sometimes doesn't?

This is not a topic I've researched much. It's just something I've noticed and I'm confused. I don't expect a Japanese company (or any company for that matter) to "support" that kinda stuff for any other reason than extra money during June, but this company in particular just constantly gives out the most mixed signals. Sometimes they're like "it's just human rights bro deal with it" and sometimes it's "that's politics and we don't do that". It just makes my brain dysfunction.

Companies in general doesn't care about social issues. If holding a certain viewpoint leads to higher profit margains then that's what they're gonna do. Never confuse company PR with genuine thought.

>>795857 Yeah, I know. And that's exactly why it confuses me. Because the "supportive" stuff is very low-key. It's usually kinda subtle and very normalised if that makes sense. But publicly they seem to pretend like they never did it and they never advertise it. But then they pull some shit like they did with the Smash online stuff. Is it the devs that want the company to support it but the higher ups don't want to? Because I've never seen them try to profit of it.

If they made a big deal out of them doing that stuff and posted it on social media and advertised it and stuff then it wouldn't be confusing, because then it would just be like every other company. But their shit is just so strange and it makes me fucking spiral every time I'm laying in bed at 4am and remember it

What I'm trying to say is that it seems like there's one party there that wants to casually support it, one that wants to profit support it, one that wants to pretend it doesn't exist and one that hates it. But who's who, who's in control, why it's so mixed, is it partially because of the country they're based in, I just don't know.

Nintendo is a massive company and it has a lot of studios under its wings. Smash from instance, is by Sora (and Bandai Namco), not Nintendo's in-house. There's plenty of space for different opinions. So yes, >>795871 is probably true.
PR surrounding queer stuff can be a bit of a minefield. Japanese games in general, not just Nintendo, don't Go There. They just quietly do representation and move on (which is ideal imo!).

>>795856 You're absolutely reading too much into this. Opinions about queer stuff don't have to be a binary support/against, even by individuals who consider themselves queer. There can always be bit of ambivalence, a bit of doubt.
And Nintendo is A LOT of people, so there's even more of that. As long as they're not actively harming people, don't worry too much about it.

Nintendo is a company and they're going to do whatever they want to do as a company. They're large enough that simply doing a small amount of pandering to the alphabet horde is all they have to do. They're not in danger of being cancelled.

>>795940 That's what happens when you waste your entire youth in front of the PC instead of seeing other people. You become an uninteresting, braindead loser.

They only support it if it helps then earn more $$$. It's like with every other corporation out there.

>>795884>>795887 Yeah, that makes sense. Thank you!

mfw leave it to the Japanese to do lgbt etc representation the right way- by treating it as something normal, instead of something "special."

>>796076 Exactly! That's the thing. They do LGBT rep correctly, but at the same time they also ban LGBT stuff and don't allow anything other than "straight male" and "straight female" on their social app game thingy, but then they also have gay marriage and relationships in some of their normal games.
They're one of the only companies that do it correctly, but then they actively speak against it.

I don't think they are unsupportive, they just don't support it like other companies, they just treat LGBT like it should be, as persons who play videogames, like they do with everyone else. They want you to focus on the games without making you feel bad or suspicious about something of your own. They do support it, you can see ACNH with the character creation (unlike Pokemon) but don't say "EY YOU YOU HAVE TO SUPPORT IT AS WELL" because... well no one likes to be told what to do

>>796124 In this case, I have never seen a Nintendo game straight saying "your opinion is wrong" or "your way of acting", or "you are doing the right thing saving this".
Those thoughs are left to the mind of the player, they will teach you consequences but never tell you to do something or you are a bad person. Morallity is all yours and in all the cases, just with some advices which never are harmful or negative.

>>796085 There is also the case of different developers, not every developer would think the same, that could be the reason why Pokemon games don't let you change your gender character and exclusive gender clothes but ACNH is like "you exists, you can be whatever you want whenever you want" so maybe is not all about Nintendo's directive. I love the inclusion of LGBT, but as a non-binary asexual g/u/rl, I woulnd't like a focus on sexuallity all the time like Netflix does.

>>796124>>796126>>796127 Nobody wants superficial bullshit. I certainly don't. I'm just confused by, well, exactly what you said. They sometimes do it good like ACNH but sometimes bad like Pokemon. Accepting minorities and attempting to profit off of minorities are two different things. I know the difference.
