Here's a simple question: Why most of mobile games advertisments are so unbelievably stupid? This "trend" started with Mafia Town and became a meme, ok, but this doesn't explain why other games decided to go with the same tactics. So... Any answers?

If you see a player being astoundingly retarded in the advertisement, you'll be prompted to correct them. This is the same mechanism that results in online arguments, I believe it was called Cunningham's Law. >t. rhetoric pro

Which tactics exactly? The ones I hate are the pulling pins to save someone trapped. Those aren't even in the games.

>>16288e That's one thing, sure, but what about those pre-rendered short clips with "gameplay" that are just... There? They doesn't show any real gameplay or anything, they don't even try to fool you because you can clearly see that this was made up for advertisement.
The most annoying ones were from Puzzles & Survival, I believe...
Almost all of them, really, from 15-seconds-clips about how you can build your base and gain tons of "resources", but you have absolutely no goal in doing that to those mini-games that doesn't even exist in the first place.

Because it works. People who see fake gameplay ad and can call it out are not the target audience.
The goal is to get as much people to download it, as some small percantage of that might be a whale and spend lot of money in it.
I actually tried games with teribble youtube ad. It's obviously p2w heavy, but people still spend money on it to be on the leaderboard and stomp on f2p players.
Some people who have terrible taste also have money and that's the target audiance.

>>9e3853 Ok then, just... Why most of them are like this? If feels like the whole industry is filled to the brim and already overflowing with such games. Are there really enough whales to keep all of them up and running?

>>c790ff It costs under a hundred bucks to make a shitty asset ripoff game if you outsource it to India, so it only takes a single whale to make a profit. And most of those games are just derivatives of derivatives of derivatives to begin with.

>>8fb206 Damn. Just a 100$ for the production of the game itself... I bet advertising costs are higher in the end. In what a weird world we live.

If an ad becomes a meme, it gets more publicity, which gets more customers. It worked with Mafia City and Grubhub. So now every ad is trying to become a meme so more people see it. It also becoming a meme expands the demographic of people downloading/buying from the ad because now irony buyers are interested.

>>c790ff Hey, if you want to have a laugh - grab an emulator and explore the ecosystem. Some Android games actually recoup a portion of their own advertising costs by advertising other shitty Android games while trying to bait you into going P2W. There's videos people going through batches of shitty games on YouTube as well, if you're less inclined but still interested.

>>784501 well, the fact that a lot of mobile games are a clone of each other makes it necessary for them to grab as much attention as possible.
There will be never enough whales, but still, some small percentage of players will be whales and the only way to reach lots of eyes are by having meme ad.
This practice has been around since mmo was THE game. They didn't use meme ad back then, but the practice of having mediocre game advertised to make a return from a few whales was.
