I kind of want to buy a nintendo 3ds xl good or bad idea?

| pros:
- aesthetic
- experience pokemon the original way
- kind of miss the novelty of buying cartridges
- handheld just seems kinda nice to own

cons:
- not really relevant anymore?
- no more gmaes will be released for it
- waste of money
- should just save for a switch

Is it worth it or nah?

| > aesthetic
yes
> experience pokemon the original way
i mean, sure, go for it
> miss the novelty of buying cartridges
good luck actually getting them, and at fair price. just install cfw
> handheld is nice to own
very much so. can play in bed, in commute, even at work during lunch
> not relevant
who cares?
> no more games will be released
the library is very big as is, throw in ds, gba and snes games as well
> waste of money
only if you buy and don't play, unlikely but can happen

| > should just save for a switch
do you want 3ds exclusives or switch exclusives? do you want it now can you wait until you can buy a switch? are you ready to pay prime dollar for switch games (pretty much everything is full $60 price)?
> is it worth it?
it was for me, it may not be for you. think for yourself

| Homebrew it and forget about worrying because no store has no game.
But seeing how you are talking about a 3DS, you don't seem to really be attracted to anything 3DS can offer.
First party games like Zelda and Mario and third parties like Bravely Default should tell you if you like it or not, but as a Pokemon machine you will waste the console in 1 month. True you can play Online without paying, but if you didn't bought it in the past it's because that's neither a point for you.

| If you want it to play the Pokemon GB, GBA and DS games get a DSi XL and homebrew it instead, the DS games won't look as ugly as on 3DS. 3DS Pokemon are skippable and not worth an entire console if by 2021 don't have the enough money for it. Overall I can't tell you if a Switch will suit you better, but a 3DS definetly won't. Btw a Switch Lite feels really good to have in hands, much better than a regular Switch.

true, but! i pretty much only bought it for monster hunter and later found tons more of amazing 3ds games after i was done with that
> DS games won't look as ugly as on 3DS
ds games look fiiine on 3ds, you only have to deal with some black borders but that's manageable. obviously not optimal, but manageable
> 3DS Pokemon are skippable
i dunno, i'm not the biggest pokemon fan but i really enjoyed oras and sun/moon

| > Switch Lite feels really good to have in hands, much better than a regular Switch
damn, i lowkey regret not getting a lite now. especially since i don't get to use my regular one in docked mode much since i only have a monitor with no speakers and plugging/unplugging my pc headphones for switch all the time is a hassle

| Hmm. Well, I bought one. Or, technically I bought 2DS XL (which is just cheaper 3DS XL because it doesn't have the 3D gimmick), but, same thing.

It's nice to have, but it didn't take that long before I stopped using it and I only really got it for one or two games.

But, I bought a Switch, and that one I use almost every day. So, I guess I personally recommend just saving up for a Switch because I prefer the Switch games and being able to play on TV.

But, it's up to you.

| My 3DS transformed into a relic once I got a Switch. Then again this might be because of the pandemic lockdowns since I usually play my 3DS during commute.

If you want to play new games, save for the Switch. Nintendo games are expensive, but the eShop has an extensive catalog and games go on sale as often as Steam.

Get 3DS only if you are willing/want to mod it to heck.

| If you can still buy one refurbished from Nintendo or somewhere else for a good price, go for it!

Since last year, I went back and played some 3DS and DS games like Kid Icarus Uprising, Codename STEAM, and Final Fantasy IV remake.

The 3DS itself is honestly a better handheld (portability, battery life, etc) than the Switch.

| >>743418 portability, yes (except if you compare it to original 2DS) as you will need extra accesories if you don't want to worry about any screen or joystick harm.
Battery life (7 hours on New models, 5 on Old models) on the other hand doesn't last as much as a new Switch model (9 hours), on Switch lite 6 hours is less but 1 hour of difference isn't that much.
However if 3DS (or DSi) always turn off wireless conection, I'm sure I had sessions longer than 8 hours without red light.

| A new generation of hacking has just started on the 3ds. Pick it up and you have INFINITE games

| >>743744 What new generation? Technically if you are only about hacking, Switch can do everything 3DS can but 100 more times thanks to the Android emulator and without it. 3DS emulator is gorgeous. 3DS can't even emulate PSX or N64 properly so I don't know what those Infinite games are you talking about.

| I mean personally I love my 3DS and still use it, but I also had it for many years and grew up using it.

Alternatively, if you don't mind emulators you can run the Citra 3DS emulator. I prefer using the computer version however there is also a phone version.
