What's your favourite item in any platformer game, and why? Power-ups that change the mechanics (like Shantaes transformations and the caps in Mario games) also count.

Anything time related is a personal fav for me. In a Hat in Time (I hope 3D plataformers count). The time slowing item is super fun. In Touhou Luna Knights is the time stop ability. It's just straight up time stop allowing you to do whatever set up... and I loooove that. :3c

>>723381 Of course 3D counts! And I agree with you. Time related items are sick!

I love double jumps, like Bass in the "Rockman" games, or wall hangs like the Thief in "Salt and Sanctuary" teaches.
Naturally, "Dandara" was right up my alley.

The elemental shields from Sonic 3 (and Mania), they feel rewarding if you don't get hurt and some of them allow you to access parts you wouldn't go if you didn't have that shield, like secret rooms staying underwater longer or walking on lava. Also Fire Shield interact with the world burning some bridges or oil at your feet. It would be cool to have a Sonic game go deeper on this concept but I doubt it will ever happen.

Might just be recency bias speaking, but I love each and every movement upgrade in Ori and the Will of the Wisps. Especially Burrow, that lets you swim through specific patches of sand and burst out with some additional momentum if you dash outwards near the surface.

this only barely counts but the blocks you can dash through in celeste made me feel like a god when I jumped out of them

Hmm. You know, I was going to make a "platformer mechanics" thread after this one had been up for a bit, but, it seems like this is straying further away from items and more into abilities and general mechanics.
So, ignore the OP post! Talk about any and all platformer mechanics, be it item related or not! I love reading the responses. I find it really interesting.

>>723573 Well, the OP post did mention "power-ups that change the mechanics," so maybe we kinda misinterpreted that.

>>723642 Yeah, no, I understand where the confusion comes from. I was referring to the type of power-ups you pick up and they last momentarily. Like what >>723456 talked about. But that's not a problem. I find this interesting anyways.

One that I love is an item in Dead Cells that instantly puts you behind an enemy in front of you, in a total "nothin personnel, kid" style.

>>723670 That sounds sick! I have yet to play that game, but ever since it came out I've kept hearing good things about it.

Wall jumping. Loved it since the megaman x series.

>>723670 there are so many cool abilities in that game. One of my faves is the head vine you get for beating the game once. Just fire it at an enemy and it locks them in place for a split second and deals constant damage for a couple seconds
I also love the Relics and the DLC variants in Shovel Knight, especially the Phase Locket, Staff of Striking, and the Will Skull

The royal capacitor from Risk of Rain 2. It's delightful when you lock on an enemy and strike them down with a bolt of lighting
