Give Spelunky a chance!

| I'm surprised I never searched more info about this game, now I can't stop playing it on my Vita.
It surprises me how this game is a hidden gem.

| Spelunky's a hidden gem? Thought it was pretty popular?

| It's, it's not a hidden gem actually. It's one of the biggest indie games and one of the biggest reasons why indie games became so popular as they are today. Derek Yu (Spelunky dev) and Edmund McMillan (Meatboy and TBoI dev) are, like, the pioneers of the indie game scene and their games are extremely popular.

It's a great game though, and it's awesome seeing new people discover it :)

| Sure, After i finish elona.

| I too am confused how someone can call Spelunky "hidden". Just goes to show how absolutely massive this industry is that even big names can fall off someone's radar.

Now that's a hidden gem

| >>720552
Ex-fucking-cuse me, but how dare you forget my man Pixel. If not for him and Cave Story, indie games really wouldn't be where they are now.

>>720576
>elona
>finish
That's a good one. Guess you're not gonna check out Spelunky then, huh.

| It really is not hidden? I mean the only time I have seen a video of any popular streamer was Alpharad and that was some weeks ago (he also did 1 on 2016). checked on steam it has half million sales, maybe not so hidden, but not as popular as any other popular indie game ever.
Casuals players are definetly not near it.
>>720597
I knew Spelunky before but never gave a chance because I though the game was a totally different thing that what I found and no one helped to find out

| >>720631 I mean, TBOI has million of videos and millions of channels dedicated to it.

>>720629 Also all of Team17 (and if you would consider, WayFordward) games. They have been around for more than 20 years demonstrating Indie games can be stable through generations of consoles.

And Shovel Knight will always be on the mouth of everyone while it's community might be a little closed, like Spelunky.

| >>720631
I guess for you it's more because Spelunky is pretty old. Original Spelunky was from 2008. This is long before streamers were a thing.

| >>720631
Half a million is not bad, and that's only on Steam. It sold over a million total copies. Which is, really good for an indie game, and especially back then.

>>720629
I apologize for not mentioning every early indie dev. I just chose one because he's relevant to this thread and the other because he's an equally big name (or bigger) from around the same time. Pixel was important though for sure!

| >>720637 Of course at that time there were no streaming, but Youtube was already a thing and there were already big channels (of course not to the point of "millions" but already there was a trending in the games that were popular). Back at that time fangames where pretty much popular and Minecraft was about to be born, so Spelunky had the chances. And yeah 1 millions is really good, some AA games don't even achieve that number, like Monster Hunter before Gens and World

| But yeah 1 million doesn't mean everyone knows about this gem and that's why I consider it hidden (I mean if there are more than 1 billion users (we can exagerate to say that spam accounts are half of them) in Steam and only, let's say, 1 million of them know about Spelunky, it's not that known, or am I wrong?

| >>720666
Sales does not equal how many people know about it, you know? Not everyone who knows about Spelunky has played it. A lot of people haven't actually, and it also has local co-op so for the people who have it on console 1 sale doesn't equal 1 player.

But also, in what world is 1 million sales hidden? If that's then half of my games are "hidden". Spelunky isn't super talked about nowadays (well, aside from 2 just coming out) so I get where you're coming from. Still though.

| >>720676 I mean if we start saying sales don't mean nothing, the term "hidden gem" doesn't make any sense, look at free to plays.
Sales don't mean 100% accuracy but gives you some context and probability, I doubt there are 10 million people knowing about this game, its sales should be higher independant of coop, look at the many 4 coop player games that got better sales than it, even with offer packs.

| If anything local coop means even more sales because some people won't wait until being at his friend's house. The best example of this are AAA games with splitscreen like COD.

| I'm just calling it because I never heard anyone talking about it, in Danger/u/ has been rarely mentioned too.
As I said I did know about it (wrongly conceptionalized) but never owned it until now. But no videos, no articles, no press talking about it, no post on reddit or here talking about it, no videos about it, no recommendation at all on shops, almost never been mentioned in top X of games.

| My point is not calling Spelunky "hidden gem" or not, for me it is, and I consider there are more people like me before that underrates it or simply is not relevant, because there aren't much people talking about it like people talk about Terraria, TBOI, Hollow Knight, Shovel Knight, Stardew...
I also consider this game "hidden gem" because I know of games like Duck Game (which stopped being as relevant) with even bigger sales than Spelunky and people even ignore newer updates.

| >>720705 or 20XX which is now getting a sequel, 30XX, and there is no noise at all from any of both games.
My point is to give little games like these or Spelunky a chance, like some random gave a chance to Among Us and look what it is now.

| >>720701 You can also add Super Smash Bros and Mario Kart to this example.

| >>720709
Hmm. Idk man. Those games are kind of bad examples in my opinion. At least when it comes to my friend group, we play a lot of Smash and Mario Kart, but not everyone has it because the person who does just brings their switch.

I do get your point though. Give more love to indies.
