I've just finished Higurashi When They Cry Hou Chapter 1

how does the anime hold up to the VN, for people who've seen both? is it like watching a movie before reading the book?

Yep, first was the novel. I personally love it more than the anime adaptation as it feels more atmospheric and tense when it needs to be so. The anime is a little... hasty, I would say? Doesn't really feel the same way. Higurashi loses a lot of it's mood and aura as an anime imo

I was really sceptical about the game and story at the beginning, unable to understand all the love around it, and for the most parts it just annoyed me to no end, but now I adore it greatly.
Can't wait to read all the other chapters! Hope the tension will stay on the same level and I won't be able to sleep again hehe
