Might sound wierd but super mario world, the last main sprite 2d mario game,and they nailed the art even more on yoshi's island, the snes has some pretty good looking games

Not really art, but visual design: Mirror's Edge. As shitty as its texturing was and how repetitive the buildings got, jumping onto the roofs for the first time was immersive and beautiful.
