Is Fire Emblem Three Houses mediocre?

| Or is it just me? Don't misunderstand me, I've played every FE games and loved them all (except for Fates) especially the GBA ones. But I can't seem to get into 3H at all. I'm finding the school system and class levelling tedious as heck (100+ class exp for advance tier and above classes is too much!) . It's more of a grindfest than any other FE games I've played before. Am I the only one?

| Nah, you're not the only one. I hate how tedious the school and class leveling are. Even though I could skip the school, I feel battles are very meh too.

I don't like how 3H tries to be this grinding time sink. I just end up wanting to play something else like Disgaea or Final Fantasy Tactics instead.

It's a generally half-baked game for me. Hopefully IntSys returns to the classic formula, or at least stop working with Koei Tecmo.

| I would say its a good game, despite its flaws. I definitely agree that I'm disappointed it went the Persona 5 time sink route, but I still like the story and connected with the characters and gameplay enough to call it good, though definitely not the masterpiece some weebs have called it.

| I... are you people playing Maddening? I never had trouble progressing on my Hard run. Then again I didn't care about making perfect builds or plan ahead on my first run, I just worked with what I have.

Never needed to grind either. Heck, on Hard I had to limit and shuffle my party so I'm not overleveled.

It definitely feel more like a marathon while previous FEs are more like sprints. Not flawless, but I think it did a good job spinning so many plates.

| It's been a while since I play on difficulties below Maddening, but my only
major complain is that it's often too easy, which wastes a lot of interesting mechanics like gambits and combat arts. Maddening on the other hand, is often too frustrating.

I think it's all around a fascinating and fantastic game though. Wouldn't mind if they use similar formula for future games, but maybe not the FE right after this one.

| Never said levelling is the problem. I specifically pointed out Class levelling is i.e mastering classes. It's obnoxious. I would not have any problem with this if you maxed out classes and got the class skills similar to previous games (for e.g at lvl 5 and then 15 in Awakening). But the amount of action you need to take to max out a class in this is super high in the higher tier classes especially if you're juggling many classes for specific skills.

| >>653438 3H was not difficult, just tedious. Doesn't help that I hated how the story was paced and presented. I stopped playing after one playthrough. Gameplay felt like a massive chore. In my personal opinion, it's the worst FE.

| >worst FE
>fates exists
are you sure?

| >>653626 yes, in fact Fates is my most favorite. Sunk 1000+ hours into it. Mostly Conquest, but I'm having fun with Revelation too.

| >>653438 exactly. Difficulty was the least of a problem in EU. It's the game mechanic itself that feels tedious and chore-like. Mastering Magic classes in this is terribly implemented because you only start out with very low amount of spells at your disposal and to get more you need to use a the spell type (Reason or Faith) more but it comes back to the problem that it's limited in the first place. The whole game feels like a grindfest a la gacha with no chance of miracle.

| 3H* not EU omg

| So we are in the timeline where a gacha game spinoff of the franchise is better than the mainline?

| As a veteran, I do happen to enjoy 3H. I think story written wise it's a step in the right direction compared to other titles. And I appreciate their attempts to change up the mechanics.

I do however admit these mechanics could be refined along with other basic functions (like why can you only access the journal if you start the school day instead of from the menu itself?). There are a lot of nitpicks I have along that point.

| I'll also be blunt, the quality of the animations is pretty terrible. I give some slack since it's their first 3D game, and it's neat that you can zoom on the map to where you are actually walking.

But everyone sharing the same animations makes the game really janky looking. ESPECIALLY during support conversations (the auto scrolling for supports could of also been better). Not to mention NPCs being weird with movement and some places not loading properly like the gate.

| And while the story as I mentioned is a step in the right direction, there are flaws in it as well. I have many opinions on this, but my main issue has to do with 2 of the routes being similar (and being a fan of the house with the similar route).

I think that it was mostly likely due to time restraints. But as a fan I would of appreciated if the story was built up further.

Once again, in the right direction. But now that FE is popular, I have higher expectations for next game.

I'd argue the game is specifically designed so you don't min-max or aim for a specific build. The game's more like a long journey, and mastering classes/learning skills is just a thing you pick up along the way instead if aiming at from the beginning.

But yeah, I realise this might not suit everyone. I just really appreciate this long journey progression style myself.

Oh boy, I have a lot of nitpicks about the storytelling too, but I'm still impressed at its scope and how much of it they succeed at. I do some amateur narrative design myself, and, well, that shit's hard.

| >>653720 it's not their first 3D game. IS got Koei Tecmo to do the grunt work of development. If you go check their previous games, you can see the similar janky animations among other things. I feel bad for them and how production has been managed, but at the same time they're incredibly under qualified for such an ambitious game.

| >>653784 you should play Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together. It's also an SRPG with a choice-driven political war story. But better executed in storytelling. It was an SNES game but you should emulate the PSP remake.

| >>653720 agreed. Shadow Dragon, Awakening and Fates also suffered that problem. Although I do appreciate their usage of colour in this one (imo the 3 aforementioned games were devoid of colour during battle animation which ruined battle animations for me). I kinda wish they'd go back to GBA-type graphics, those were neat and clean.

| >>653784 I've already played and completed LUTC. It's a marvellously written game and battles are exciting. On the downside I really didn't like how everyone looked the same in it.
