how do i stop button mashing?

| it's not even about fighting games, pretty much in any action game i end up just mashing the attack button instead of pressing it just once per attack and timing the hits. unless timing is actually part of the mechanic and is required for combos like in Phantasy Star games, but even then i sometimes get too excited/impatient and end up pressing it several times per attack
it's a detriment to my skill and gameplay experience but i feel like i can't stop it even when concentrating

| maybe you're gonna have to loose a lot of games / fail a lot before you can stop mashing.
maybe you won't feel as fast.
if you think your way of playing holds you back somehow, you should try to change it.
you can always go back later when you're bored of making the conscious effort.
with that said, maybe mashing is fine...

well, it's not like i mash random buttons without any conscious effort, i usually manage to press the right buttons needed for combos, but start mashing one button until the move i need now comes out, then before it's done i start mashing the next one already. most of the time the buffering makes it so it all works out fine, but not all the time

Well, if you're playing online then yeah, that's just how it works. Like, some of the most intricate combos in stuff like Smash is literally just spamming buttons in the correct order to buffer shit. If you play offline/locally where the buffering is barely there, then being more precise and shit pays off.

yeah i mostly get this issue in single-player games anyway where i press the button one too many times when spamming and screw up my combo, or i'm so concentrated on spamming that i don't have time to dodge or block or switch characters
is there maybe some trick to breaking the habit, or does it all come down to literally "just don't spam"?

| Don't see any problems in button mashing. I usually mash when a game types down a text very slowly or starts some unskippable bullshit and tries to infuriate me.

If you want to learn to do combos properly, the yeah. You just need to practice the timing and shit.

| Yeah, op, I think the only way you can get over it is to practice?

... This is gonna sound silly, but try playing a Souls/Soulslike game. They punish mindless mashing so it might train you to be more aware of your surrounding (?).

But real talk tho, if you're still having fun when you're mashing, I don't think it's a problem at all. Then you just gotta find games where mashing can be fun

That part about Souls/Souldslike games is actually good advice. I often take stuff from other games over to fighting games. Like, if I've been playing a fast paced shooter, by reactions are often better once I get back to fighting games. Or with Souls games, I learn the benefits of being patient and pressing correctly.

| practice a good combo you know, do it again but only doing each command once. have button inputs showing so u can see if u mashed. thats what i did to help stop being a potato. u kinda start feeling a rhythm for timing you can apply to other games.

| >>653402 in ds3 mashing works just fine on pve most of the time, try your hand at pvp, most weapons only have a 2 hit true combo but many have psudo combos

if you mash roll you'll get roll cought to death against someone who knows what they're doing

(Roll catch is getting hit after the invincibility from the roll goes away but you're still in the animation, if you spam roll the input queue will make you insta roll after the hit and make it really easy to time another roll catch)

I don't mash in PvE...

| >>654241 you don't have to, but personally as an invader I see way to many people just mash r1 with a straight sword, and for the most part that works on the pve until they run into the ones with poise or bosses, though the ones I see tend to have a clan of phantoms too so they never really learn
