Do you girls reset in Fire Emblem if any character dies?

And if you do, why not just play casual mode (if the game has it)?
Also, tell me about your successful "iron man" playthroughs of FE if you've done any.

Obviously meant "g/u/rls" in the title, didn't see the autocorrect in time.

Most of the times I just let characters die, but if I feel like I've been bullshitted (like when a character gets oneshotted by a crit that has a 1-5% chance to happen) or I get absolutely fucked and basically run out of good units to play the rest of the game with, I do.

Sometimes, if I've grown attached to them, if I'm not too far into the fight.
I tried playing Casual once, but it's just not as fun. Apparently just the threat of having to redo the battle again is enough to keep the fight tense.

All the Fire Emblem games I played didn't have a 'casual' mode, so I only reset if a character died in an arena, at least during the first playthrough.

Reset.
8 might have been the easiest to me. The Tower of Skelingtons can be exploited to get 20/20 on all characters.
As for the others, I usually avoid the arena. I know there are ways to increase your chances of survivals, like leaving and entering until the entry price equals to a unit you know you can kill, but honestly, I don't think is worth it. Only go for arena characters and that's it.
Fuck FE6 and Roy promoting 3 chapters before the ending.

Let them die in the first playthrough reset in subsequent ones. Resetting is not the same as casual mode, casual mode lets you plow through stages with everyone dying and coming back AFTER, yo7 don't start over when someone dies, resetting is like a harder challenge where you game over if ANY character dies, though it may make things easier in the long run it also makes things harder in stages that are already problematic.

I've played only the first one one gba. It depends on a character and situation.

I don't ever advocate casual mode it destroys the game design completely. Fire Emblem was designed with permadeath in mind and its nearly impossible to actually get a game over if you have all these disposable units at your command and there's never any tension or challenge if units will just come back to you if they die. Just don't be one of those losers who picks and chooses who dies either every death is a game over or you ironman that shit.

>>573743 Fe isn't that prepared towards permadeath, key characters just get unavailable, the story won't mold around these kind of changes.

>>573758 Story-wise it's not (because that would be hard af) but mechanic-wise it definitely is. They give you three dozens characters a game for a reason.
... That reason is arguably because Intsys loves designing character, but also it's also gameplay balance.

Would it kill the devs to just put a setting in game where it'll say "mission failed" if a character dies instead of just making us reset back to the starting screen?

>>573902 good question! It all depends on the architecture of their software.
if for instance they made all characters that game over hard coded in the engine(I hope they're not that dumb) then it's going to be a terribly annoying chore and won't be worth the trouble.
if they were smart and made that a configurable trait then all they'd need is a separate configuration that sets all characters as vital characters that game you over upon death. (1/2)

But there may be other reasons to not do it beyond the control of the developers. (2/2)

I always reset. However, I still prefer to remain in Classic over Casual. Casual just ensures my characters survive any KO.
Classic, however, forces me to either play the map perfectly or finish it with one less character I spent gold and EXP on.
Casual Mode removes that dilemma and tension, which makes it boring for me. I gladly reset because I'm forced to play better if I want everyone alive.

When my characters die in Fire Emblem I just go play Advance Wars instead :/

>>573758 It's true that important story characters never actually die so you don't mess up the plot but you do get slightly different scenes or support conversations if a unit dies. You'll likely never see it in echoes because of the turnwheel but the post battle lines will have units mourn the death of others instead of their usual cheers. And of course it adds something to the character endings like how Ross strived to be a warrior like his father who died in battle.
