For all macOS gurls, how do you download a windows version of steam to play windows only games on it?

|

| I only use macOS at work

| Operating systems don't work like that. Windows only games can only run on Windows. That's why they're Windows only. If they could run on MacOS they wouldn't be Windows only.

To play Windows only games on Mac you need to either stream it via cloud (there aren't any good options for doing that yet) or you need to emulate the Windows operating system on your Mac, which usually requires a fuck ton of storage space and a fair bit of money too.

| >>722dbc is it possible to put the emulator on a USB key?

| >>563355
How much space does it have?

| >>563387 16 gb

| >>563355
If you want to do this, the drive should be fast enough (preferably a USB3.0 drive). Do note that unlike what >>563349 said, you won't be emulating Windows, you'll be virtualizing it through VM.

To also answer OP's original question: I haven't tested this personally for Steam, but Mac has a port of Wine, which allows you to run Windows programs. I played my GOG copy of VA-11 through Wine in Mac and it works all okay.

| Sorry for the late reply.

>>563427 I tried using wine, yes it works. I played my touhou games and VA-11 from it but steam seems to not work. I can't connect to their servers. Can't access to the shop but the library. I tried installing from there but it just makes the game broken or corrupted. I know it's possible with wine but I don't know how.

| >>563327 WINE can do that. Check out winehq.com

| >>563653
The reason I didn't recommend Wine is this exact reason. It only works on a few programs and is, in my opinion, pretty shit.

16GB is not enough, and the drive, as the other anon said, would need to be powerful enough (which a normal USB drive isn't).

Thanks for the correction.

| steam has a new compatibility tool called proton for this. download steam for mac, then go to >steam>settings>steam play and check 'enable steam play for all othe titles'. so far it works really well on linux, not sure if it'll do well on mac.

| >>563700
I thought that feature was designed specifically for Linux.

| >>563730 it is but I've heard it is compatible with macs for some things

| >>563850
If that's the case, then OP should definitely do it.

| Op wine is what you need but Apple actually makes things harder, since they want everyone to use their metal API instead of Vulcan, so existing tools don't work and you have to go dx11 > Vulcan > metal it's a mess really

proton was in theory for both Mac and Linux but was never actually released for osx nor did it really work well from the few people that said they got it to compile, oh that's another thing because it's not official you need to compile it yourself

| So be sure to thank Apple for sandbagging wine and preventing you from using it to it's full potential

| Also I'm not sure why you're steam can't connect, try installing the most recent Dev version of wine, and grab the windows installer (download and transfer or disable JavaScript if there's no button to see all versions)
You might also want to install brew and winetricks, and if you want the easy way codeweavers crossover is a thing that sets up wine for you making it much easier but it's not free, there is a trial though

| If you need more help let me know I'll answer what I can since I actually have a MacBook pro 10,1 right now

| Hm, I tried downloading the latest version of wine but nothing new.

I tried winetricks but it crashes for no reasons.

Sorry for the late late reply again

| >>563700 On mac, Steam Play dosent show. It's linux only.

| >>564132 hmm that's odd, I'd say try the trial of crossover and if that doesn't work something's fucked since that's commercial software, I'll test my wine install for you in a day or so when I get a chance to make sure it's not a bug in wine/osx

>>564133
Yes officially it's Linux only but the git repo originally had osx listed alongside Linux and they had compilation instructions I believe, not sure if they worked ever but the thought was there

| Just ran iexplore in my wine install and it connects fine so I'm unsure what's going on with your install, did you install wine through winehq or brew, I got mine from brew so maybe that's a factor, what version of osx are you running

| >>564251 Got it from winehq but I would be suprised that was the problem.
I'm running macOS mojave version 10.14.2

| >>564389 honestly it's just a shot in the dark, that's the official release, brew is just a package manager
