The flying cap sucks. The underwater controls suck. The level design sucks (in some places) Sometimes you don't know if Mario does this weird ass U-turn when you're trying to turn around. Other than that I understand why so many people are fond of this one, there's a lot more freedom than in modern mario games. But I also think people who swear by it probably have major nostalgia glasses, cause you really need to ignore a lot of flaws to get into it.

That being said I probably will continue playing it nonetheless, at least until I get bored

Also forgot to add that the game throws a lot of bullshit levels at you early on, like bob-omb battlefield is fine, but then they throw a bullshit water level, and a bullshit ice level, like damn you couldn't save those for later?

i fully agree with those criticisms. a lot of the nostalgia masturbation is about it being a launch title for the n64. muh 3d graphics.

>>1024383 well despite the flaws I completely understand why people like it, I think it's probably very fun once you reach a certain level of proficiency with it, cause the game gives you a lot of freedom. I just think that reaching that level is hard if you haven't already been playing the game since you were a kid.

Do you know what else sucks and likes to turn around, and get into? ...and continued to get played with nontheless? ...and get throwned and couldn't get saved for later? ...and likes it, with level of proficiency with it, that gives you a lot of freedom, since it was a kid?

>>1024386 I am shocked. I thought the evolution of competitive freestyle yo-yo'ing was more well-known over the internet.

Very fair tbh. I honestly don't really mind stuff like the water levels, but I also enjoy just listening to some nice music with something pretty to look at. Like, FFXIV early game is unironically enjoyable to me. But as someone who barely touched the game as a kid and only played it fr as an adult, I agree. I 100% see why it's such a popular speed game, but pretending like it's a miracle and a must play is silly It's a solid game with a big impact, but there's better platformers

I don’t really have nostalgia for Mario 64, only played it for the first time in 2020, but I think it’s great. It is a little clunky at times, but I expected it to feel way worse to play considering its age. The DS version of the game however brings the jank into sharp focus. I still enjoy playing it, but find myself a lot more frustrated using that dorky little thumb stick.
Awesome game

For being one of the first 3D platformers it did a lot of things right but camera work was not one of them, especially when you have the flying cap.

yeah SM64 has a shitton of bad points, the fact that is was revolutionary says a lot about the state of 3D games at the time.
that being said being the first ones to think of a joystick of sorts for 3D movement rather than trying to do 3D on a controller clearly made for 2D deserves a lot of praise, and despite the flaws Mario is fun to control when you get him going and don't mess up. (bonking against walls is still so fucked up though)

>>1024744 No suprise there. Super Mario 64 was the 3rd 3D platformer ever made! (4th if you count Bugs! for Sega Saturn) So it's really impressive how revolutionary it was at release and how well it has aged considering it didn't stand on the shoulders of any giants. The devs had to figure out everything during development.
All the other early 3D platformers were so basic and janky but at least Jumping Flash! have its moments. The first 3D platformer was Alpha Waves from 1990 btw.
