My parents decided to adopt a two month old kitten and my 2 year old cat has been acting weird. He keeps following the kitten around the place and observing him from afar. He also slaps the kitten if he comes too close but claws remain retrieved. I also feel weird splitting attention between them because my two year old is my first real cat. I suppose it's a matter of time until we all get used to this new situation

Yeah. The big cat has to get used to the new kitty. Before ya know it they'll be thick as thieves :3

You are now a g/u/rl of 2 cats, make sure to give both of them plenty of attention or one will get jealous of the other !

I want to get cats. My current apartment doesn't let me have them.

My mom wants to return the kitten because she thinks they aren't getting along. We don't understand cats as well as dogs so she thinks he's being mean although personally I think that's just how cats tend to play. I ran some experiments and they don't hiss at each other, in fact I have seen the older cat licking the kitten after he bites him. However the older cat tends to be rough and has hurt the kitten a couple times.

I would like the opinion of someone who has several cats. Should I just return the kitten? Or how long should I give it? I wasn't emotionally prepared to take care of second cat so I won't be sad if he goes away. He will go back to his previous home and reunite with his sister.

I don't own cats but I've got used to think that the usual domestical animal can be taken as a childbrain. They're very frank with their real nature. It depends if your first cat has some senso of dominance as sort of house social status or is very dear to his territory.

For the attentions, it has to be split, your first cat has to get used to it so you may have to fall out from him slowly to balance it out. There are actually a lot of behavior you should have yourself notice for your 2 years old cat, for you to better tell what's going on then us. Have you ever had seen your cat act in this rough way you say with other animals? There are many other things too, what kind of race the two cats may be, if they're good hunters and or willed to hunt.

It's firstly a matter of compatibility then a question of getting used to.

Also the amount of feed and time spend outside can matter for their health and mood. Little extra such as playtoys can help too. Things have to shared but also they could have some time together with nothing else but an eye dropped if it were to not be going right.

Really it's a lot, the cat may be also be playing with the kitten to test him or her out, to sort of get the grip of the new (maybe) permanent guess.

May be also being clumsy as your first cat may could not be used to deal with a kitten. Just make sure your cat doesn't get too arrogant from not having any reason to not do as she likes toward the kitten, so stop any possible damage. For whatever keep the kitten or not, there really is nothing much to say if you're being neutral yourself, unless you were looking for cats lover to push you into giving more emotions into the new comer from the gurls here.

also sorry if I just went random here and there if you value which of the two genders each of your cats have. Now that I think about it, at the weirdest there may be also a gender interaction

>>9cf196 I appreciate your help. You offered good insights for someone who doesn't own cats. I wanted someone honest like you who wouldn't just tell me to keep the kitten. I think the truth maybe what you said here>>960380, he's not used to play with other cats in 2 years. In any case he seemed to have bonded with the kitten more and it's not as bad as in the first day or so
