The better functioning ones can, and with enough success you'll never know they are autistic - unless a fellow autist sniffs them out over a period of time. They know their own. Make sure to write your character as an adult though - before they learn all the little social cues intellectually, they're just as autistic as any other.

maybe he'd be autistic on hidding the fact of him being autistic, so his autism protects his autism on being overly autistic on being not noticed as autistic

I think if they're not super autistic and had to learn how to mask at a young age, absolutely. But some people are just too autistic to really hide it

depends on the level of support needs they have. people with lower support needs tend to be able to mask and hide their autism to better navigate the world, but it takes a lot of energy and is really terrible for mental health. people with higher support needs usually aren't able to mask at all.

honestly i hold a lot of stuff (not limited to frustration and anger, in which i can control well) so much it's become instinctual to me to the point where it doesn't do anything negative to me.
at least that's what i think. to answer OP's question, yeah.

In the short term under specific situations for sure. At my work I have a pretty good aut radar.
One freaked out about a food order, another kept talking about explicit studies around customers because they were dialogue treeing. And the last one was more of a general vibe.
You cannot hide, we will find you and coddle you.

Yes, I kinda can, but it sucks my energy to do it.
I can mantain my normal act like looking at people's eyes when talking to them and participate in small chat, but if the act goes for more than 3 minutes, I'll start messing up and I imagine will start emitting "please leave me alone" cue.
Too much of this for a day, I'll be spent before the workshift is over

Yeah, just research "autistic masking". Most people legit don't believe me when I tell them despite the fact I'm autistic to the point where I can barely work and all that shit
Definitely ain't perfect though, and it depends on the person how long and how "accurately" they can do it It's also something that persist, even behind closed doors. Most people end up stuck with some of their "mask" unconsciously still on when alone or with safe people. Could be cool to keep in mind

Big respect to you btw OP. Asking for experiences of autistic people to try writing your character accurately is sick, god knows there ain't enough good rep out there
