How to get into a media without getting in contact with its fandom?

| So I was wondering if it's even possible to engage in anything (like manga, anime, movies, music, games, series, hobbies, etc.) without getting in contact with its fandom?
Most of the time the toxicity, uncomfortableness and harassment from a fandom is what pushes new fans/interested ones away, no matter if there's good ppl in it. If there's a way to avoid a fandom as a whole, not get in contact to them so ur curiosity is not ruined, tell me.

| Well... I don't quite get what's hard about avoiding fandoms. It's not like you are dealing with scientologists - just don't look up something you do not want to.

| You answered your question already. Just enjoy the media without interacting with the fandom. Don't look up for fanart, don't look up for fanfic, don't join in discussions. If it shows up in your feed, just mute the phrases or the people posting them. It's not difficult.

Yes, it is difficult, if you enjoy media internet tends to recommend you things about that media, and most of the times are about the fandom.

| Just don't interact with them.

| Just from anecdotal experience... you cant. I played Persona5 and enjoyed it and didn't interact with its fandom at all. It wasn't until my friend played it and sent me memes about the game in which I got 'For You' recommendations about the game and by proxy its fandom.

That was 3 years ago and I'm still getting those same posts recommended to me despite me saying 'not interested' to every post. Its inescapable.

| >>707145 jesus what hellscape of a platform are you on? that sounds worse than youtube

| I don't think there is a way to really not come into contact with something's fandom anymore. I just close my eyes and don't bother, don't care about what fucking awful things the fandom is doing. Out of sight out of mind is basically the way I deal with it, with some helping of cynicism and hipocrisy of course.

As a whole, though, try to discuss what you like in niche communities instead of bigger places. Danger/u/ is just an example.

| Stop giving a fuck. That's literally all you have to do.

Just imagine a smug pepe in a tuxedo holding a glass of wine everytime you see drama and toxicity, etc in a fanbase.

| >>707145 I used to like the Persona saga until Persona 5 came out and became famous. The fandom fucked up everything.

That's true, many anime and game I came across was through the fandom content and it actually repelled me from going check it out. BNHA, One Piece, JoJo, Free and many other sports anime/manga, Smash, Undertale, Persona, most of gacha stuff, a lot of MMORPGs, and others are just a few examples of cringing me away from engaging with it bc of the fandom.

This

| >>707170 You make it look easy, but it is not.

| >>707193 I wanted to watch JoJos years ago, but I'm saturated as fuck with Jojo's and I even didn't watch it, well, I can say I watched the whole anime only looking at memes that I didn't search for. Jojo's is in every fucking place and I'm tired about it.

Yeah, sometimes I wish that a JoJo anime was never made to begin with. The fanbase was tame and chill before 2012 (except a few elitists and gatekeepers here n there).
Nowadays is just a bunch of toxic retards always goin "iS tHaT a JoJo ReFeReNcE ???" to *insert band/singer/song name here* or *insert super power name here* is mentioned.

Fuck im drunk

| Uhh.. Just don't talk to them? You can watch a movie, read a book, listen to music,, and think deeply about it, without touching any of the idiots that abound around it. If you hear someone being an idiot, just walk away. I don't care how rude it is---fuck politeness. It's more important to not waste our time.

| The whole `fandom' idea sucks. It's basically a facile way to claim others for your own identity. Which sucks. There are persons, and some persons like some things, and sometimes, some things that some persons like are the same, and hey discuss it, as separate individuals. That's healthy. When you `join' a `fandom' you abandon your identity to the collective, and then you no longer have anything interesting to say or hear.. it's all one big circlejerk.

| >>707793
Huh...I never looked at a fandom like that. That's interesting.

One fandom I always stayed away was the fighting games community. I always wanted to play but whenever I watch how competitive, salty and overall gatekeeping it is, whenever I pick a fighting game to play I feel embarrassed bc I don't wanna be put in the same category as them, nor be judged for being a beginner by them.

| I, it's, very easy actually. Just consume said media. That's, that's it. There's nothing more to it.
