i keep trying but then i'll go from happy to a depressive episode. i keep getting bad thoughts in my head and it won't stop. it makes me lose all my motivation for whatever i'm doing and it hurts

Same here but regular jogging/running sessions helps a lot with evening out the dips in mood and motivation.

You sadly can't force happiness and trying to force it usually makes you feel worse overall. I recommend getting professional help or reaching out to someone you trust so you can talk about it. Doing that has made it a lot easier for me to pull myself out of depressive episodes.
Trying to get into healthy routines and shit can make a really big difference as well, bit that can be very challenging when you're depressed.
