Basically everyone thinks broadcasting platforms are indeed social media but what about narrowcasting ones like Discord?

I consider it social media personally.

I think they are like social midia, there is the comments, the like system, the sharing of info etc, every thing that other social midia have but with a focus on video sharing

I'm not really sure what to classify Discord as. I mean, it's more or less a private platform. Is MMS social media? Like, you can share things and talk to people, but you choose who you send it to and the servers are just, well, big groups chats. It's hard to say.

It is still social midia, you can conect with people online, share videos, informatin and etc, its private but it still is a midia made to socialise

I mean it depends on what you use it to do.

I don't consider Telegram or WhatsApp to be a social network.
Facebook, Twitter etc is.
Discord is a little dependent IMO what you use it for but primarily it's to connect with others, I guess.

Social midia, socialize trough midia

I feel like a lot of people are scared to say they use social midia, because there is a lot of bad steriotypes, but a lot of thinga are considered social midia so people should not be afraid of it, and social midia isnt even the problem, its the people who dont know how to use it in a healthy way

Is texting social media? You can send text, photos, and videos, and even participate in large group chats. You can have multiple large group chats going at once. You can add "contacts" (much like "friends"). It's very much like Discord, it's just that Discord is the more refined version. When texting someone, you're socializing via media.

I think it is

depends, I don't think anyone calls a forum a social media, or texting even. I think the main aspect of social media are individuality and publicness. individuality rules out forums and BBS which are mostly focused on the topics or the community rather than on the individuals. publicness rules out what the OP is saying, but I think discord is a bit mixed because you can join public servers and a lot of people do that.

personally I kinda draw a line between the "social media" part of discord with the "private messaging" part. basically I join a few public servers but I'm mostly lurking and not actively looking to befriend strangers which was what social media was designed for I think.

What about stuff like vine, tik tok and instagram, that just exist for cloutchasers?

>>673136 These are decisively broadcasting: they're intended to be received by the platform, not by specific people.
I think the big difference between discord and mms is that mms is usually intended for a group of people that you know and have contact info for where discord can be used for stuff like news feeds for games. The difference is probably because in mms, new members are specifically added, whereas discord invites can be shared to whoever finds them.

This gets even more confusing when you consider that instagram, twitter, and reddit all have dms/mail/username tags to use as narrow channels!

>>673141 I prefer just calling anything that allows communication a social midia, doesnt matter if its private chat or not, you are still socializing through a digital plataform
Post number #673147, ID: 99ea3b

And like I said, a lot of people like to think the plataform they use is not social midia cuz social midia has a lot of steriotypes and they want to feel like they have a high ground

I don't care about saying I don't use social media. I'm just genuinely confused at times about what the definition is. Like, I consider this site social media, because it's fully public and stuff. Same with Reddit when I occasionally use that. Discord is, like, not fully public though, which is what has me confused. Like, getting invited to a group chat is technically what servers is, but also, not? Like, the definition that all online communication is social media is weird to me.
Post number #673157, ID: 688446

That would make every single online game a social media. It would make game consoles social media. Like, idk. Having such a loose definition sounds weird, because then, like, literally everything digital is technically social media.
Maybe everything digital that we use to interact with other people really *is* social media, and people only started trying to define it as facebook/twitter/reddit in recent years?
There have been "social networks" before facebook, and the term "social media" wasn't in vogue yet. deviantArt, Myspace, LiveJournal, Friendster, et al were just their own things.

social media noun "websites and applications that enable users to create and share content or to participate in social networking." Definitions from Oxford Languages
So basically everything is a social media by the real world definition, but we can go back to pretending our personal opinion and personal definition is the real one.
