i really just can't see the appeal of harming yourself using something that makes you feel like shit. i'm under 21 so i can't do either but even if i could smoking makes you smell and look awful while drinking makes you dehydrated and makes you wake up feeling like shit the next day.
if any of you guys smoke and/or drink; why?

I like the taste of certain alcohols. Don't like smoking.

>>658598 i can understand liking taste, but i think that the health concerns kinda make it seem not worth it to me. you do you though because i see no problem with drinking when it's done in reasonable amounts and it's not putting the person doing it or others in any real danger.

I like drinking socially because it just makes things easier and less anxious, though i don't enjoy being very drunk.
For a lot of people smoking is fairly effective self-medication for various problems although those people are also the most likely to have has problems with addiction. There's also a lot of marketing

To be clear, smoking is addictive to everyone and if someone's going to use nicotine today they should just vape. But that's why a lot of people in my family smoke

I drink socially because I enjoy it. Some of us get together and let a part of our inner selves out. It makes us relaxed and happy and we use that mindset to make other people relaxed and happy.
I never feel bad the next day either.

>>658606 i can get the social aspect, sometimes things are tense and a lot of people cool off with alcohol.
most people i know who drink say they feel bad the next day, so i'm going to assume you don't drink nearly as much as they do in one sitting.

People don't drink to feel better. People drink to feel less bad. There's a big difference. I'm talking about DRINKING drinking, not about having a beer with a coworker twice a week.
Smoking kicks the brain like caffeine. It also acts like a small meditation.

Smoking tobacco and getting addicted to it is the dumbest thing I've ever done. I started when I was 18 and stopped when I was 24-25.
Outside of a few medical aspects I think selling it should be banned or heavily controlled. It only serves to make you addicted and give your money to megacorps.
The "buzz" isn't that good either. It only feels good when you feed your addiction.

I only drink socially, when i am with my close friends, it's fun to be drinking and doing stupid shit every now and then. I also smoke socially, it helps me to get drunk faster. I've never felt shitty the day after I drank and I usually can remember everything I did and said the night before while I was drunk, since I left my hometown and haven't been able to see my close friends again so I just drink when I go to concerts( ̄▽ ̄*)ゞ
To be fair, i'm well past drinking to excess nowadays. I can't handle hangovers as well as I used to when I was younger, and getting that shitfaced is no fun (not to mention dangerous) when you don't have any close friends nearby.
Generally speaking, one to two drinks for men and slightly less for women is the "safe" amount for maximizing benefits of drinking versus downsides. So I just made it a habit to stop at two, and honestly, I rarely have the desire to drink more.

OP, different drinks have different impacts on different people. For some, wine gives them massive hangovers even if they drink just a bit, whereas other alcohols might not give them any hangover in any amount. I drink for the flavour, and the comfiness social aspect of chilling with your close friends, and I also luckily don't get hangovers. It may be different for you though, OP.

I think anyone that asks why people smoke has never felt the effects of nicotine
It feels nice and is very addictive so its very easy to justify the harm

There's nothing positive biologically.
The action of smoking is always detrimental to your health.
And concerning alcohol, there is no small amount of it that is overall beneficial. Unless we're talking as a pain reliever. Or if you need to relax. Or if you're in such a shitty situation that it's become better to knock yourself out and risk dying than to stay conscious. I can't think of any...
HOWEVER, consuming tobacco otherwise might be beneficial because of its stimulants.
Post number #661821, ID: 1474a7

It's not at all about the biological benefits, it's about how you feel.
If smoking gives you the boost that you feel is needed, then whatever works for you, all detrimental effects aside.
If you need a drink so that your fucking knee hurting all day long can be somewhat forgotten for a few hours, well whatever... If consuming alcohol makes you feel better, then I can understand how you can just ignore the detrimental effects.
Post number #661823, ID: 1474a7

tl;dr : it's all about what you like, or what feels good to you. the biological effects don't really enter the equation in that case.

>>661823 It's all about what you like or what feels good to you. Unless you're addicted. Then it's all about satisfying that addiction.

I smoke tobacco, and I used to think the same way as you. My life was decent enough, and I couldn't comprehend why people would waste their health on some fucked addiction that for most people last their lifetime.
Then I started having panic attacks multiple times a week and struggling through the worst months for me ever mentally. I was going insane and I never felt calm, ever. I knew how fucked up nicotine was, but I also knew it was anxiety reducing, and that was that.

I don't enjoy smelling like shit. I don't enjoy the taste. I don't think it's cool. I don't think it's worth it to do.
I did however feel hated constantly. I felt constantly nervous, depressed or both. I felt like I would want to kill myself if I didn't do anything. I started seeing hallucinations, and I was not on any sort of drugs. I couldn't take it, but nicotine helped me escape. Just for a little bit. Calm down. Sharpen my sense. Feel a little bit of joy.

Now I'm addicted and my throat ain't working right and at times I'm mad at myself for starting. But I also feel such a relief whenever I light it up and inhale the smoke, and sadly, but honestly, I can't imagine living without it.
No offense, but regarding alcohol, this is actually completely wrong. Presuming you don't drink to excess- which is more than around two to four drinks per day, depending on the country, alcohol actually does have some health benefits:
It can lower heart disease: https://www.hsph.harvard.edu/nutritionsource/healthy-drinks/drinks-to-consume-in-moderation/alcohol-full-story/#possible_health_benefits
Can potentially increase your lifespan: https://www.reuters.com/article/us-wine-benefits-idUSN2844356120070228
Can potentially reduce the chance of erectile dysfunction: https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.1111/j.1743-6109.2008.01115.x
May push back dementia: https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2011/08/110816112134.htm
Apparently, helps prevent the common cold (while smokers were more susceptible to it): https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/8363004/
Reduces the chance for developing gallstones: http://www.uea.ac.uk/about/media-room/press-release-archive/-/asset_publisher/a2jEGMiFHPhv/content/moderate-alcohol-intake-reduces-gallstone-risk
And lowers the risk of Type 2 Diabetes: https://care.diabetesjournals.org/content/28/3/719.full
That being said, I don't drink alcohol specifically to get these health benefits, but for the taste. I just limit myself to two drinks or so because hangovers aren't really fun anymore and I might as well get something out of it besides the tipsy feeling.
I will say that the lowered blood pressure is legit for sure, however. Alcohol is a blood thinner.
Post number #661849, ID: 621563

Keep in mind that drinking to excess completely wipes these benefits, however. No sense in no longer having gallstones if your liver starts to die from cirrhosis because its tired of filtering the booze.

Yeah, smoking is good for the relaxation, until you smoke 2 and you feel nothing. And then you smoke 3, 4, later a pack, and then you are just doing it out of the habit.
My dad is at the habit stage now. Feeling bored? Smoke, getting excited? Smoke, just eat? Smoke. He has no self discipline, don't get up in time, don't take his medications, but he will never miss his smoking schedule.

And his taste bud has been damaged now. He needs extra salt/spice or he will complain how the food is tasteless. Even sometimes after some extra salt he still can't taste it.
I am not a smoker and I have no idea how relaxing it is, but surely it is not worth trading for your ability to taste your food. Not mentioning other downside like yellow teeth, having to spend money for it, bad breath, and increased risk of lung cancer

Post number #662813, ID: cee754

>>662667 It really isn't, at all. It's definitely relaxing, but it's brief, and then suddenly you can't relax without having it in the system, but then you build up a tolerance, smoke more, ruin your health, waste tons of money, and it's just not a good time. It's also insanely hard to quit though, and most people aren't able to quit, ever. So just one slip up can be enough to have you addicted for life.

>>662806 What I'm scared of, is that to get those benefits, you have to drink moderately AND regularly... So if I want those hypothetical benefits, then does that mean I have to actively get 3 or 4 drinks over 4 days in a week ? I'm also already healthy, does it mean that consuming alcohol will further benefit me ?
That's what I meant by "no small amount that is OVERALL beneficial". I guess that applies only to my case.

>>662815 If you're trying to stay healthy, just don't. It's kind of like how marijuana has health benefits. Yes, your back pains and shit might calm down, but also, you're pulling smoke into your lungs. Just stay healthy homie.

After reading that study, I'm actually ready to allow my dad to keep drinking an occasional red wine glass during a meal a few times a week... does sound like he can benefit in his situation.

>>662820 Well, it was a comparison. Smoking ruins certain things in your body, and so does drinking. I'm not trying to say they're equal, not at all. Just similar. There are pros and cons to all drugs. For some people there might be more pros than cons, for some people there are more cons than pros.
Person who posted the studies earlier: IMO, if you: 1) Don't already drink and 2) Don't like drinking, then you shouldn't start, lol. I'd take drinking over smoking any day though.
