I want to learn how to draw now that I'm in quarantine, but I really suck at it

| Failing over and over is just frustrating. I don't really know what's the best way to approach this, do I really have to try, and try, and try again until I eventually start making at least SOME progress? Maybe there are some subject matters more suitable for beginners, that are not just the basic forms like cubes and spheres? I'm getting slightly sick of drawing only those already.

| I'm terrible at drawing so I started drawing my hand. After only drawing hands for like 50 times in a row I became half-decent at it.

| >>644775 I mean when I started drawing years ago I would use those shapes to form a face. But after that I would just draw things I like over and over very critically. I think most important thing to get better is to just practice. Draw things you like or want to draw eventually. You just get better after awhile!

| >>644775 Looks like we're both in this g/u/rl! Let's draw daily together!

| >>644775 screw drawing learn 3d modeling in blender instead

| Fun fact:
On average, you will have about 10,000 bad drawings before you get a good one. It's a steep learning curve but it's worth it!

So it is just repetition, huh. Hands sure are tricky though.

>>644817
That's what I'm trying to do, but when I use those shapes the result is rather stiff and kinda weird-looking. With how little actually turns out like I envision it I'm just wondering if maybe I'm doing something wrong.

>>644822
Drawing daily is kinda tough as is... Especially so when constant screw-ups seem to drain my motivation this much

>>644859
Nah.

>>644914
Good God, that's a daunting number.

| Don't try to draw. Just get used to moving a pen around on paper, let images tske their own shape. Focus on line quality and shading techniques, then try to focus on creating a picture.

Pay attention to what you're not drawing as mich as what you are, negative space is important.

Draw what you see. Often times the brain "knows better" but if you're trying to draw a dog, and can only see 3 of its legs, ignore the part of your brain trying to fit leg 4 into the picture.

I've been doing exercises for line quality (mostly putting 4 random dots and connecting them all with lines, then drawing an ellipse inside) but it gets pretty dull pretty fast and improvement seems marginal at best.

Could you also please elaborate on negative space? Or recommend a resource that describes how to utilize it properly?

So what you're saying is that it's more important to draw from reference and focus on the actual subject specifically? Do photos suffice?

| Gave it another go today. I still don't quite understand how not to completely suck. I even got a reference image and tried not to deviate from it all that much this time around, but the result is still just... disappointing. Do I really have to just keep doing it again and again?

Yes, repetition is key to developing a skill. There are no real shortcuts. Sure, you can always study the subject and get better that way but you'll still have to draw pictures over and over if you want to get good.

If you're in isolation try talking with someone while you draw to make it less tedious, like over facechat or discord or something. Stuff always seem easier and less boring when you're doing it with someone.

Also Google ADHD. Seriously, there's help to get.

| LISTEN TO MY FUCKING ADVICE
1. draw something ugly.
the ugliest mofo you can.
everything you do is already crap, isn't it? then you can't get any crappier. draw a general depiction of a guy who looks like trash. realistically? up to you! just have your fun doing it. the goal is a bad drawing. you literally cannot fuck up. anything can be ugly. and if you actually like it? well, good job i guess?

we are all so harsh on what we draw because we want it to be good!

meaning, you actually know what you want! imagine being an artistically insensitive pleb who's not as refined in impressionistic aesthetics as you are.
what's holding you back is yourself, get rid of that 'everything i do is trash' doctrine and enter child mode again! you remember how you used to draw as a child and didn't give a fuck how it looked, you just liked doing it? get into that mode!
you learned to criticize yourself as you grew up, which holds you the fuck back!

| >>645712 >>645714
i wood like to add that i'm an artist so i'm talking artistically of course! passion helps in technique but it still has to be learned!
give your soul some rest and paint a piece of yourself. throw it all on the canvas.
liberate yourself

You think ADHD might have something to do with it? I mean, I realize that the problem is probably with my mindset first and foremost, but that seems like a bit much.

>>645712
I made quite a few bad drawing already. Don't really see how doing it again intentionally is supposed to help..?

>>645714
Yeah, I wish I could get back to "I don't give a fuck how it looks, I just like the process," but I have no idea how to do this or whether it actually is possible.

| >>645715
Passion is what I sorely lack in life. I thought drawing could be something I'd be passionate about, since I remember liking it a lot in the past, but so far it's only been a source of frustration, and passion has yet to show itself...

I'm not gonna diagnose you right here but you do show signs of someone with concentration issues. I just got diagnosed myself and I can relate to you a lot.
I really wish I would've gotten it many years ago. Adult ADHD is really shitty.

| >>646582
Concentration issues... Yeah, I either have trouble doing the same thing for 10 minutes and it feels like hours, or I get so into it that I can scribble away for an hour and it'll feel like minutes. Usually the former. I believe that might be the reason for how difficult it is for me sometimes to just sit down and actually start doing things. I was planning to book an appointment with a psychiatrist before the quarantine started, now I'll have to wait until it's over.
