The reason it's glorified is that a TRUE MAN can cry and still be considered manly even among anectdoting stereotyping people whereas most other men would be mocked and ridicouled for it by their (insecure) peers. Wether or not this was glorified in some cultures I do not know but it has always been a sign of true confidence.
