Start learning the russian (kyrillic) alphabet. Once you got it, you will see that there are some words in russian that you already know from other european languages. Other than english russian characters are (almost) phonological (spoken as written).
I only learned russian for the "ru-net", because there are competent crackers and hackers. Unfortunately the once "free" ru-net is dying because of the global commercialization, propaganda, control and surveillance race.
