Assuming I use Windows 10 and get all my software from more or less trusted software, do I need to slow down my system by using an antivirus?

Well, that's about the kind of responses I've come to expect around here... Still, I am somewhat disappointed.

I find that the built-in antivirus works fine. It has come a long way since, and I haven't found any need to use any 'advanced' antivirus.
If the built-in antivirus isn't servicing well then I recommend ClamAV/ClamWin. It's not any better, but it's FOSS, so it's not going to hog money from you.
Of course, this does come with a big triangular warning: if you get your software from shady sites then no antivirus is worthwhile.

Block scripts and ads in your browser. Oh, and also know your sources. If you're an experienced leecher, you should know if it's bloatware or to good to be true on the first glance. I have no other antivirus than Windows Defender - works quite well.

The antivirus scene is turning so much to a circus joker's game.
Antivirus: Some software to minimise damage done from malicious software.
If one gets the software from trusted sources, the need for an antivirus is moot. Software from trusted software is not malicious.
But when you use software from untrusted sources, potentially malicious software, then the antivirus can't help you.
Boy am I glad I am not part of the windows ecosystem for these last 12 years!

>>487986 You're a lucky guy. I need to use some proprietary bullshit software, specifically designed for windows. Wine can't do shit about it.

No. Install a free unix-like OS.

Why would you need an antivirus software? Your OS is already a malware.

>>479393 >I use Windows 10 >and get all my software from more or less trusted software There's no way you are serious with this statement^^
To the question in the tread title can't be answered honestly with "yes" or "no". It's a "it depends". Ideally antivirus software is not necessary. But also ideally people won't use windows and they would have some basic knowledge about the technology they use or at least accept some basic rules in dealing with it.

>>490184 Hence the "more or less", smartass. Plus it's heavily tweaked, so it helps at least somewhat. And *ideally*, games will come out and work properly on Linux.

Install CCleaner... you get a free copy of Avast for free... right when you install... no pesky check-boxes to accidentally un-set, it installs by default for free! Even if you are already using Windows Defender... For Free! Ok, so Win Defender is fine, don't bother with anything else, except possibly Malwarebytes.

You don't need antivirus software as long as you don't connect your computer to any other computers. For added safety, you can not turn it on.

>>490302 Yea, it (Avast) def. doesn't uninstall fully. It leaves some exe behind that concerns me.

No not if you know what you are doing. Just scan every 6 months or so with a trial version. You will see how clean it stays
