It depends of what you want to do, if you're a gamer, you'll struggle because Nvidia kill itself every update, if you aren't, just use Nouveau (open source, less performant drivers) and enjoy an easy life.

I haven't had any problems with nvidia drivers for like 8 years or so.

I have Nvidia card and run proprietary driver's, if it kills itself you basically just launch with nomodeset from grub and purge the old driver then install new one but I haven't really had to do that recently... I also don't run Linux daily driver though so

Also of note if your card doesn't get a picture use nomodeset and then install proprietary drivers nouveau sometimes doesn't support newer gpus (I had that issue when I got my 970 originally) because Nvidia gives them 0 help

It's been a nightmare for me trying to get legacy nvidia drivers working. I wanted to turn my old laptop into Retroarch machine, but I'm this close to giving up. Grain of salt though, since I've only ever used dummy-friendly distros like Pop_OS. My modernish card (2060) has no issues.

>>826795>>826752 did you actually mean "kills itself" literally, as in they are programmed to have planned obsolescence?

In my experience no it just sometimes through updates manages to put itself in an unusable state

So you have to nomodeset and purge all Nvidia stuff then reinstall

Just install proprietary drivers and you will be fine.
