Youtube-dl taken down

| Apparently the RIAA successfully got youtube-dl taken off github

Discuss

Says dmca spokes person says it's not actually a dmca but rather that it's illegal per se (on it's face) because it's used/designed to circumvent digital protection measures on copyrighted music on youtube

| Can't have shit these days

| eh, I've been using Internet Download Manager for that for years and it doesn't seem to go away anytime soon.

| Did anyone save its source code? Id rather have it since it's a diamond tier program

| >>708326 the name sounds sketchy af

| >>708326 did you really pay for this?

| is it on gitgud?
i have it, think i can upload it for peeps?

| >>708333 at this point better store it in dropbox or google drive i think

| >>708339
google drive? wtf?

| I have doubts about the legality of that takedown. But they have money, so fuck the law.

| https://yt-dl.org/download.html btw

| >>708328 what do you mean? It's been free ever since.>https://www.internetdownloadmanager.com/

| >>708328 I've been using it since 2011 and it always allowed me to download videos from sites in high quality that didn't allow it.

| >>708407 dude on their site they have the buy button and on the download page they talk about registration and 30 days trial

| >>708344 at hard times everything is an option

| Copyright laws are cancer

| >>708671
That's why we have the copyleft.

| Hahahahahahahabhaa

| I love you

| I was once a fish

| Lucky me for still having it installed. Don't know of any better software to make backup copies of online things including subtitles 'n stuff (GundamInfo YT channel is gold). Also how can the RIAA claim that YT videos are copy protected? There is no DRM at all on YT stuff. And the video's are posted publicly. Honestly just f the current copyright laws. They are completely outdated and designed for a world of paper.

| So from a legal standpoint, assuming YouTube does basically anything it could be enough to be a "digital protection measure" but that's up to a court

Videos being public doesn't actually change anything here

One of the things mentioned in the dmca was in the unit testing they used a YouTube video of three songs which the RIAA is connected to as evidence that it's designed to circumvent digital protection measures

| From a legal standpoint, css (dvd drm) is super easy to crack, even on your phone, but still counts under that
it really doesn't need to be much to be considered good enough

Also of importance, github basically don't have a choice because that's how dmca works, if they declined the notice they could be held liable, which is the same reason YouTube has the system they do

| And to top things off, https://github.com/github/dmca/tree/416da574ec0df3388f652e44f7fe71b1e3a4701f

There's a full copy of source someone used a bug to stick on the GitHub owned dmca notice repo

So there should be a dmca notice coming for the dmca notice repo soon

| >>e5e4f0
thx for the link! will archive to tape

| No problem

Bug goes as follows apparently
Github backend stores all forks in the same underlying repo, the website will allow you to see a fork through the main repo because of that, notice the /tree/ in the URL

So basically anyone can fork any repo push whatever they want and make it look like it's from the original, hence YouTube-dl under an official github owned repo

| youtube-dl was a shady website loaded with landing pages and viruses anyways. good-riddance. the website preloads your downloads and laces them with whatever they want. download sites are not to be trusted

| >>709345 YouTube-dl is a open source project not a website

| To be extra clear, it's a command line program written in python
