Lenovo from now on had to stop selling computers in germany because they lost a case about licencing conditions against nokia, who owns the rights on commonly used hardware decoders for the h264 video codec. Hopefully many other companies will soon be affected by this too, so that they reconsider relying on proprietary "standard" technology. Thank you nokia!

This way everything will be filled with proprietary non-standard technology. Wonderful.

>>707602 Everything already is filled with proprietary tech - that's why there was a lawsuit. And most companies do not have the power to just create their own solutions on a whim. Not in a sustainable way. If anything this lawsuit may force companies into looking for opening standards up.

>>707850 Depends on the outcome. They can conglomerate into different clusters that use same proprietary tech branches. They also can also do nothing and carry on as it is. But that's long term. Who the hell knows. Short-term? It's bad for Lenovo. That's it. It's not the first time some tech company won a case of that nature.

You act as if free (as in freedom) audio/video codecs aren't even a thing. Actually they can technically compete very well. I don't understand why companies prefer relying on proprietary standards and taking the risk of becoming massively depended to other companies. Maybe the decision makers do it because of ideological reasons "free and open stuff = bad, proprietary stuff = good".
I don't think it's for ideological reasons, more like higher ups face the choice between "consortium x who controls the patent for y will scratch your back if you do mine and add this patented tech to your products" and implementing an open standard.
If any manufactures chooses the first option, it already forces the rest to do so for compatibility and usability.
