I'm that g/u/rl with the MacBook failing to get GPU switching to work, early 2013 apparently refind can only spoof if your efi supports 2.x but mine is 1.10 which means I can go fuck myself
Anyone have any ideas, can't afford to buy a new laptop and having to use current osx is killing me

Nvidia GPU works, Intel doesn't because Apple turns it off if you boot not osx, 4hrs of battery life isn't ok

Install GNU/Linux.

I guess I could have made that clear but osx works with no issues except for the fact that it's apples os, I want to run Linux but can't deal with only having 4hrs of battery life

>>554798 "bumblebee" may be the answer to this issue, but usually there is no official support for Apple devices by most distributors. My suggestion: Sell your macbook (the best thing about them is that they have a good resell value) and buy a new device which uses more standard compatible hardware. Librem or slimbook are probably the best examples here, but also many models by big manufacturers (=cheaper) like lenovo, samsung and asus could do it.

Got a low end gamer notebook for half the price of a MacBook, better specs than a MacBook and has a ton of LEDs I don't regret it

>>555159 pop after switching just gets to "logging successful boot for grub" and freezes though so I don't know if I needed to install a driver or something before trying that

>>555161 Never heard of pop OS. I recommend using KDE Neon, which comes with the latest stable version of superior kde applications on basis of the latest ubuntu lts. There you can install the "bbswitch" package (bb for bumblebee) You could also test the latest developer release by adding this repository: https://launchpad.net/~bumblebee/+archive/ubuntu/testing I'd also suggest using the proprietary nvidia driver, because the open nouveau driver unfortunately still causes issues.

>>555161 For the latest proprietary nvidia driver add this repository: https://launchpad.net/~graphics-drivers/+archive/ubuntu/ppa And for the latest open drivers (in your case maybe nvidia and at least intel), this one: https://launchpad.net/~oibaf/+archive/ubuntu/graphics-drivers
Alternatively to all of this you may use "Chakra" as distro, which is based on Arch and comes with a graphical installer and the KDE Desktop. (Yes, I'm a KDE fangirl. Fuck GNOME!)

>>555200 pop os is system 76's distro based on Ubuntu, they sell laptops and some have Optimus so I believe it comes with everything needed to switch along with Nvidia drivers (if you want) I tried before about 6 months ago on Ubuntu but could never get it to work and just gave up, same issue really Nvidia works if i switch I had to put nomodeset and turn Nvidia back on, I was using prime-select and not bbswitch though

TBH not the biggest fan of pop but I thought it was worth a try if it'll work since they've tried to make switching really simple
