Editor thread
| My everyday editor is MicroEMACS (the torvalds fork with utf8 support). It's pretty responsive, i genuinely like the emacs command set and i favor some differences of uemacs to FSF emacs, inherited from lisp-machine and og EMACS. In addition i have FSF emacs open on a desktop for slime and gnus. Tried getting XEmacs to work, since i prefer its philosophy, but the difficulties in compiling it on recent systems and the rather primitive ilisp-mode ended up being dealbreakers.

Terminal flow control! Jokes aside it's a highly responsive emacs with fast startup. The expected features like keyboard macros, multiple windows and an adequate if awkward extension language put it leagues above vi and nano. The small codebase, which compiles anywhere from DOS to Solaris and can be read and understood over the course of an afternoon, is a plus as well.

Despite developer statistics, i don't think Visual Studio has any cultural staying power. There is barely a difference between it and Eclipse, XCode or the majority proprietary language IDEs; all of them form a monolith as similar to each other as notepad-clones are to notepad.
Remember Atom? It consistently ranked high in developer statistics. And yet in 2022 it was silently deprecated, because it was just another iteration of MonoIDE, this time with a JS plugin system.
