1. The common name of the OS is Linux. Being pedantic only causes confusion
2. Linux can exist apart from GNU, ie android
3. GNU is a suit of too's, which can be combined to make an OS. Linux is an OS that uses many of the GNU tools
So you can have GNU without Linux, Linux without GNU, or Linux with GNU
but I just say Linux, because I'm not going to list every set of tools my os uses
