My current pc is dying, and it has windows, when I get my next one I'm leaving windows forever pretty much. My thoughts are to either do something arch based or use gentoo, but I feel like gentoo might be a bit too high maintenance. I've heard good stuff about endeavourOS and nix but never tried them. I'll be using this pc for everything including work, pcb making, games, ect ect.

Windows, maybe a Mac, maybe Ubuntu or redhat but I don’t know how they run stuff which isn’t in their package manager

manjaro if you want a complete arch-based suite

Just try a few major ones or ones you particularly vibe with, same for desktop environments / window managers.

yeah, give endeavourOS a shot. if you'll don't like the preinstalled packages, arch is always an option. wouldn't recommend nix tho, it's more a server OS than a desktop one.

Endeavor is like arch but fully configured? Sounds like a good thing to start with. You can always do real arch later. Afaik nix has a steep learning curve. So I wouldn't recommend that for a beginner.
(I started with antergos, btw)

I believe that something more stable and less bleeding edge could fit your use case. I suggest anything that runs Debian wether that would be vanilla debian, devuan or Ubuntu. But if you prefer rolling release distros then sure, install arch.

I’m happy using Linux Mint, but I’ve heard great things about Manjaro. I just liked Mint and haven’t felt a need to upgrade.

>>1051667 I use Debian with a barely modified i3 and Brave, and it's super low maintenance.
I just run "sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade" like once a month and that's all. I literally never touch it again after that.
As a person who used to use Arch and Gentoo for years, I'm most satisfied with my computer with Debian. I don't have to worry about dracut or compiling Qt or cxxflags, i can just smoothly read manga and do Anki decks on my shitty celeron netbook

Do not listen to anyone telling you Debian, the newest Debian dependencies are from 1930 (maybe not now but as of a few years ago I remember it being horrendous, go with something arch based)

I don't like partitioning on Linux. If you want to make separate partitions from your system volume, it will be restricted to root by default. It's inconvenient to have to change it using command line.

I tried out endeavour and nix on my laptops. Endeavour was super super simple, easy to set up, just worked. I can see why people like it. With Nix, I made the unwise decision to install the light version of it, but I got it all to work after 2 hours of banging my head because my nvme ssd needed a random driver. Nix is more tedious but it seems super stable and the built in rollback is really cool. I'll try both out more for a week or three.

Whenever nix is brought up I like to share my experience with it. When I installed NixOS and ran nix update command - it kernel panicked. When I rebooted the nix sqlite db was corrupted. There were no nix commands to fix this. There also were no sqlite clients in default installation (yes, even no python). So it shat itself, fell on its shit and choked on it.

If you are interested in gentoo I think you should try it. My first distro was gentoo (switched from windows 10 little over a year ago) and I would not say it's high maintenance. I update my system once every week or so and it usually takes 1 to 2 hours, 30 minitues being firefox (no binaries). It was a bit difficult in the beginning, but since I got used to the package manager and Linux in general it's been smooth sailing. Only the occcascional error, but nothing I couldn't fix.

Hermetic package management for OS kernel with system libraries and facilities actively hostile to it is a clinically insane idea. Ignore NixOS.

I love openSUSE tumbleweed, it's a rolling release but comes with btrfs + snapper setup on install so if something breaks on update you just reboot and rollback
Uses RPM as it's package format Can pick between a few DEs on install (KDE gnome and some others)
Zypper is quite nice if a bit slow but they've got an improvement on that in beta

tl;dr >>1051667 Try debian (beside console one, it also have version with graphical installer and xfce preinstall, but be ready to be not on edge - not on newer kernel version, even for regular packages).
Or void linux.. (beside console one also with xfce preinstalled version.
OpenSUSE, sourcemage, lunar linu..
Try do not touch any distro based on another distro (like Manjaro), exception: fedora, centos. Forget any *ubuntu series! Do not even touch it by 10km-stick!
