freenode got taken over by some crazy person and everyone moved over to libera chat. other irc nets are still around too. as for internet forums i cant think of any that i know that are still active anymore sadly :/

Some private alternatives are Matrix, Session, SimpleX. None of these are particularly popular...though I do use Matrix regularly.

I think irc or jabber enough good. For voice chat may be mumble or TeamTalk 5.
