It's actually part of the fediverse, a greater social network with software like mastodon, peertube and friendica where their content is shared across each platform. So if I have a mastodon (twitter-like) account and you decide to have a friendica (Facebook-like) account, we can communicate with each other seamlessly. Also, fediverse software is made to be hosted by people and communities, not companies, so it's FOSS
