Use your ears. Really /listen/ to your esthesis of it. Like it? Good. Look at who's involved in getting the music to you---performers, composers, poets,, producers, studios,,---to see how you like /their/ stuff. Or try describing the qualities you like about it. Try looking for music with similar qualities. Of course, don't limit yourself to that. Try random things. Try /arbitrary/ things, if you don't have good randomness. Try /however/ finding different music. Just remember: use your ear.

Just alt rock?? I feel like everyone knows alt rock and a lot of it is really meh. How have you avoided it so long? Try Beck and Cage the Elephant. Both have good fun alt rock music. Don't expect too much though because it is... well alt rock

i think alt. rock is just a very very very big umbrella term and it includes many subgeneres. is REM alternative rock? what about linkin park? arctic monkeys? what do these bands have in common? idk, it doesn't really make much sense.
excellent advice on this thread. i would add: read. read about the history of bands you like. about their predecessors and their successors. you can find some hidden gems if you do that.

>>724125 and sticking to the music, i would reccommend siamese dream by the smashing pumpkins. it's a 90s classic and very accessible. the vocals are very memorable and the songs do a great job on mixing dreamy/mellow parts with guitar heavy fuzzy/noisy parts. i think the lyrics were ok, sometimes 90s 2edgy4u can be very bad.
my fave song from the record is luna which is not really representatative, but i think it's great for closing the record.
