Why does this board seem to dislike very mainstream genres?

I never see any love for genres like hip-hop and pop, but I've seen city pop mentioned here more than I have anywhere else, along with weird experimental shit, metal and straight up weeb shit for lack of a better word.
Now don't get me wrong. I love city pop, I can fuck with some experimental stuff, metal is a really fun genre and I can dig some weeb shit.
But why does this board seem to straight up dislike everything "popular"? Is it just "ew, normie" or are there other reasons?

Became this board consists of people who have grown sick of popular commercial shit. Though I know people outside of this board who dislike modern day hip hop or pop because it's just SHIT.

I like plenty of mainstream music, but it's, well, mainstream. I can talk to virtually anyone about it on pretty much any platform. On the other hand, just explaining to most people what Midori or koenjihyakkei or Guernica are without getting weird looks is an uphill struggle, let alone actually convincing them to try it. Even stuff that's technically mainstream like YMO or P-Model is too much to ask for.
Some of it is just internet contrarianism though ┐('~`;)┌

>>720574 So, popular = trash, because I'm unique. Got it.
>>720580 Ah, yeah. That's fair enough. Still though. I wonder how much more active /mu/ would be if people just, you know, weren't contrarian. Like, I get it. Mainstream bad because... that doesn't make me feel unique? But for real though. It's kind of childish how intensely people deny anything popular. Even if the artist isn't popular some people refuse to listen because the genre is popular. It doesn't make sense.

"Why does this board worship Va11 Hall-A and not Fortnite?" Basically you can visit 99% of other sites to worship pop culture.
Post number #720737, ID: 3bbd1e

>>720730 That's, a retarded comparison. I'm not saying pop culture either. I'm saying that people here seem to hate music no matter if it's famous or not, because it's from popular genres.
I haven't seen this board specifically hate on every third-person shooter because one of the biggest games in the world is a third-person shooter, you know?
Also, games really don't have anything to do with music taste.
But obviously that doesn't seem to matter to people like you.

>>720571 i don't know... for me it's less about the music, some mainstream music is really decent. i really hate streaming music services, """playlist culture""", it's the ultimate commodification of music. take spotify playlists or lofi hip hop radio - beats to relax/study to™ as an example.
i don't agree with >>720580 i think that most people doesn't listen actively to music
Post number #720807, ID: 3bbd1e

>>720799 Well, yeah. I despise playlist shit like that. It's retarded. But that's not what I'm talking about though.
And, for clarification, I'm not talking about mainstream music. I'm talking about mainstream genres. There's a difference.
For example, people here don't seem to mind talking about metal, because there's not really any mainstream metal right now. But if metal becomes super mainstream then I can almost guarantee they'll stop talking about it, you know?

>>720737 I think it's really more about the individual artist than the genre, isn't it? I know there's at least one other g/u/rl who likes daoko, and I doubt anyone would have a problem discussing RIP SLYME or Hannya, but all of the above are Japanese rappers rather than whoever's on the US top 40.
It's absolutely an elitist hipster thing, but it's also just part the character of the website. A site dedicated to VA-11 Hall-A will attract people who are into similarly niche media.
Post number #720818, ID: 3bbd1e

>>720812 I mean, I guess so, but also, I just find that kinda retarded to be honest. Like, I'm into so niche shit as well, but I don't shit on everything that isn't niche and view more popular stuffs as worse and shit like that just because I like some niche stuff.
It's just, idk man. Being elitist in terms of stuff like music just seems so close-minded and I honestly don't get it.
Like, sure, a lot of top artists aren't good, but even smaller artists I feel like would get shit.
Post number #720820, ID: c6ff69

>>720818 I agree that it's silly, but it's kind of just the way it's been since the dawn of time. People who look down on the mainstream and people who think anything outside the mainstream is for freaks are just two sides of the same coin. It is indeed close-minded, but that's humanity for you ( ´_ゝ`)

>>720820 Yeah, that certainly is true. Sadly. I just hate it, and I wish this place was exempt from that.

>>720861 If you want serious music discussion free from thoughtless bias and groupthink, your best bet is, like with everything else, a small, close-nit group of friends who genuinely appreciate your opinion and vice versa. But if any of us had one of those we wouldn't be here, so why don't we use this thread to talk about the mainstream music we do like!
I've been getting into Supertramp lately. That late 70's falsetto never fails to brighten my mood ヽ(´▽`)/

>>720865 >Let's talk mainstream music >70's rockband that hasn't released anything in 30 years
They are extremely mainstream though! I just found it funny.
But, yeah! Sure! We can change the topic to mainstream music people here like. I feel like we won't come to any other conclusion than "elitism" when it comes to the original topic, so why not?

>>720872 that's interesting
i've noticed that kids nowadays won't listen to "old" music unless it's part of some viral meme.
see: toto africa, country roads, all star, etc.

>>720928 Oh? Probably because a lot of them don't know about it maybe? Idk. I listen to a fair amount of 80-90's music. Not much 70's but occasionally. I don't really give a shit when it came out as long as I enjoy the music though. But, it might be, as I said, because some don't know about them. If their parents for example don't listen to older music, and most of the mainstream is just talking about the new big artists, then, I can't really blame them.

Op, do people actually shit on mainstream genre here? I know it doesn't get discussed a lot, but I haven't seen anyone actually shitting on it.
Myself, I uhh haven't listened to anything mainstream in years, so I wouldn't know what to say about it. But I'm sure if you want to talk about it, people can keep an open mind.

>>720961 I think so? Any mention of mainstream shit I've seen here has either been ignored or gotten shit on from what I remember, though it's been probably half a year or more since I've seen anyone attempt talking about it here though, which is kinda why I made this thread.

Mainstream music isn't bad or even something I dislike, I just never have a reason to play it. Since I got too sick of ads to listen to the radio anymore, I'm never exposed to anything mainstream. The last time I heard something popular was Say So by Doja Cat, which I heard because I got a Beat Saber map of it. I blame automatic content recommendation systems.

>>721120 Oof. That was a very mediocre song, and it was a while ago.
Do you not follow any artists at all though? I listen to some pretty mainstream stuff but I haven't listened to radio or anything like that in years. I just follow the music of certain artists and then maybe look up artists that they have features with or just look at who's new/up and coming and then see what sticks.

Wait is OP just hating music sub-genres in general? I find some of the niche sub-genre titles to be annoying but the music itself I love.
Post number #721180, ID: 3bbd1e

>>721175 I, no. No. Did you read at all? I love music sub-genres. I listen to and love a lot of more niche shit or, like, between genres type of stuff. The point I'm trying to make is, why do people care if something is popular or niche if it's good? Why do some people refuse to give mainstream stuff a try just because it's mainstream?

>>721172 I don't really look for new artists. If I hear something I like for another reason, I'll look it up and listen to it, but unless it's a really unique sound or a particularly good song that doesn't wake me want to follow the artist. I definitely never check on who is popular.
It really just comes down to being infrequently exposed to popular music and not having a great desire to investigate it.
Post number #721723, ID: 184d23

>>721645 Hmm. Yeah, it's definitely the lack of desire to investigate that's, like, the reason here.
Like, I don't like a lot of the music from newer artists, but I listen to new artists anyways because sometimes you find someone who's style and sound you really like, and then you suddenly have a lot of new music to listen to and you know you'll be getting more of it as they've usually just started getting popular.
I recommend trying but if you don't want to put in effort, don't.
