Kimberly La Valette is Misunderstood, and it's the Flaming Moai's Fault

I don't know how many of you here still consume VA-11 HALL-A content, but I've spent some of my time watching vtubers play through the game. It's fun seeing their reactions, and I got to pick up a couple of things I missed on my playthroughs.

Something that sticks out to me though, is how much people hate Kimberly. And it makes me angry that no matter which playthrough I watch, I always see the chat say things like "Lol, it's the Twitter woman" or "Oh no she's here". She's been relegated to being 'that annoying character', when there's more to her than what we initially see.

It's understandable at first, since she hasn't exactly given a friendly first impression, and neither have the other clients of the first day, with the exception of Sei. (Also, personal bias, but I think the red rimmed glasses make her look like a radical feminist, so I instinctively disliked her initially).

However, if you've played the game as intended, you would eventually come to find out Kim was saved by Boss from a suicide attempt, as she broke into tears thanking Dana for saving her life, and that the reason she was so unstable on her first day was because she was in the middle of a mental breakdown. If you're very perceptive though, you might be able to piece it all together before it even got that point.

But basically, Kim works at the Augmented Eye and she has a lot of pride in her work, so much so that she refused to join the the 'Lana Smithee ghost writers' clique, which got herself bullied by them relentlessly, so much so that that she would've taken her life had it not been intervened by Dana.

Donovan mentioned that he got a lot of female interns from a romance movie about a journalist which attracted a lot of high school girls who don't really have a passion for journalism. They probably formed the clique, but that's besides the point.

I don't expect streamers to read between the lines. They have to focus on being entertaining, so that might mean cutting off the extra fluff like the in game news app and board. And even if they're really into the game, they still have to interact with their audience, which takes away a lot of the focus from absorbing the story.

Which is why the third time Kim comes by is so important. It's a very blatant confirmation of what was subtly implied through out. It gives the player a new perspective on the character, and shines a light on Kim's bizarre behaviour in the beginning.

And the Flaming Moai goes and takes that away by replacing that entire encounter with some random ass character that's never shown up before. By preventing her from showing up, it removes the resolution to her character, and all that's left is that inital first impression, that she's a mentally unstable bitch.

I've pored through so many streams of this game trying to find someone who would go through the game authentically, and EVERY time I see assholes saying 'hurrrrr flaming moai flaming moai gotta do flaming moai'. I really wish people would stop doing that. Read Only Memories isn't even that good of a game.

I really feel like it would've been better for the flaming moai not to replace a character on certain days to prevent stuff like this
