Will the cyberpunk future hold up if capitalism fails?

Cyberpunk is usually portrayed as a dystopian late stage capitalist world. With the current pandemic crisis and the US openly prioritizing corporate gains over human life it definitely seems like people are realizing capitalism doesn't exist to serve the working class. Would a cyberpunk future exist without it? And do we really want the disparity that cyberpunk represents to begin with?

Prioritise corporate gains over human lives? Cunt, if they're not earning money, they don't really got much life, do they? Would you rather see a US where COVID spreads a little bit faster or a US where every middle class family suddenly becomes more. I feel like the latter would be a lot, lot worse.

>>650244 >Prioritise corporate gains over human lives? Yes, it's not exactly a well guarded secret that American healthcare operates this way. It's the only developed nation where life expectancy has been steadily going down instead of up. >cunt ??? >where every middle class family suddenly becomes more Becomes more what? More rich? Definetly. What USA have now is socialism for the rich and servitude for the shrinking middle class.
It's very cyberpunk in the making.

I don't see a realistic cyberpunk setting in anything but late stage capitalism or downright fascism. There need to be a huge divide between wealth and power but technology and the assorted knowledge need to be kept available for everyone even the poor. And said technology is used to try and shorten the gap between wealth and power.
I don't see this working in say, a post scarcity civilization.
