| No experience in choking people, but about the veins: when you gently press your fingers between the Adam's apple or a bit higher and the sternocleidomastoid (these long throat muscles on the side) against the throat, you can feel a pulse. If you press there on both sides, blood flow to the head will be cut and the person will fall unconscious after a few minutes. It's harmless if done only briefly and feels like soft choking, you can try it on yourself.

You should be careful to not physically hurt too much the upper neck, sure you can put pressure, but use your palms rather than your fingers.
