Seems to have very clear Japanese influence, but everyone has English names? Thoughts?

follow up question, does GC have a flag?

If I remember correctly it's somewhere in America

I don't think it has been conclusively decided in VA-11. In /cyb/, it's basically its own pocket state that doesn't attach to any nation.

I see, I was looking at the wiki so I have a general idea in my head, but I wonder how big it is. Can't wait to see what St. Alicia will be like as well.

As it is /cyb/ wise, GC can be wherewher the hell you want it to be. Number of players, including me, put GC off-world, as in, on a planet that is not Earth — Va-11 Hall-A mentions space travel, so it is canonically possible. Other players put it on Earth — which suffered a number of major catastrophes in Va-11 Hall-A, so the geopolitics in-universe is different enough to allow GC to be placed anywhere (except Japan, as it is mostly underwater). —UKT

Several players place it somewhere on Earth, while some others see it on separate planets, as described above. This also means everyone has a different idea of what year it is.
This is canon to the /cyb/ verse and is sometimes remarked upon in character.
Welcome to /cyb/!

I always took it as somewhere in west coast america. Since there was mention of Neo-San Francisco in one of the Augmented Eye articles. Like it became its own metropolis city state nearby.

Man I'd not even considered the possibility of GC being off-world. Now it makes me even more curious about where it could be canon wise. The moon maybe? With all the other tech going around in universe I don't think terraforming the moon is that far out of the question.

>>576829 There is also the character Dana who makes a cameo on "read only memories" ser in Neo-San Francisco.
I personally always keep it ambiguous when it comes to mention the location of the city. -RW

>>576839 In VA-11 universe this is impossible since we do see the moon with a big cannon on it. But I think it's plausible with how /cyb/ is.

I have some other OOC questions here, as a newbie. Like, what year is it ICly? Are there any major events not mentioned in Valhalla I should know about? Or is there no agreed-upon canon and I'm just overthinking things?

>>577057 There are plenty of major events that happened outside of Va-11 Hall-A, roughly 60% of them mentioned on wiki because everyone including me is too lazy to fill it up. There is no set year, only degrees of 2XXX and 20XX. —UKT

>>577116 Thanks. I saw the wiki a bit after I posted. I'll try to read through it more closely soon.
According to "refugees" and at least two healthcare corporations, the year is somewhere like 196 AP and they've never heard of the Julian calendar.
For most people, especially those who claim to have lived in Glitch City their entire lives, its 2076.
Still others believe its 2064, or the late 2030's. At least two citizens fell through time disturbances and come from present day, only alive through the strength of their wits and knowledge of cyberpunk memes from the early 21st century.

Generally, the citizens of G.C. prefer not to worry about the details since you never know if someone's telling you chip-truth or is high on some drug or another.
Naturally this makes even currency a nightmare- to simplify things, most people adhere to zenny, the local currency, or nuyen, which is roughly equivalent to 10 zenny per 1 nuyen, and 1 nuyen to 1 21st century US dollar.
The fact that G.C. was a worldwide petri dish even in the "original" universe means that things like asymmetrical technology (teleporters and artillery class laser weapons walking side by side with conventional munitions and railguns) are given a blind eye by common folk just trying to make a living. But there are a few things most people can agree on.
Magic "surely" does not exist, just super advanced, proprietary technology that no one has seen before, no matter what the user insists they have up their sleeves. The majority of the city's population, middle class and up, are augmented in some manner. Cyborgs infected with experimental tech viruses, "aliens," and mutants stalk the poorer streets.
The GCPD , once militarized, destroyed itself in a massive civil war and has never recovered, while corporate security forces control the city- what they can expand into, anyway- the city is seemingly infinitely large.
Online, swarthy deckers and aspiring street samurai bump heads with Mr. Johnson's and eccentric personalities as everyone tries to get ahead or each other. Rogue AI stalk the Matrix for unknown purposes.
And if you're really lucky, you might just see a dragon.

>>577499>>577503 Thanks for the info! Heh. Originally I was going to make my character be from the present via some means (in other words make a character based on myself) but I felt like that might be too cliche. He is still based on myself though.
