| What do you usually watch when you just want to have empty thoughts, just happiness?
I love stuff like Yuyushiki and Flying Witch. Just snuggle up and watch people live the life you wish you were living.
Sometimes I also watch stuff like Daily Life of High School Boys and Gintama. Normally I'm a manga elitist, but pure comedy shows like this is best as an anime, because the voice acting really helps you to ignore the fact that you're laughing alone.
What about you g/a/ls?

| My go-to when feeling down is always either Trigun or Angel's Beat.

Trigun is mostly because is awesome, but Angel's Beat, although gets pretty sad, is mostly just feel good moments.

Another one is Persona 4 The Animation (NOT The Golden Animation, very different). But I only recommend this if you either have played the game, or you really don't think you'll play it.

| Natsume Yuujinchou is my favourite chill anime. Is one of most wholesome and kind-hearted animes out there as well.
I recommend it truly, makes me feel that we humans can make good and beautiful things in this life.

Pd: >>a5c603 Based Angel Beats enjoyer! Quite a beautiful anime too. It was the first anime I've watched in my life!

| Kokoro Toshokan. It's good to just relax with some cute girls and have a nice cathartic cry or two towards the end.

| >>814379 I can never get over Angel Beats because there's way too many questions about the whole world to stop thinking about it. How did their world come to be? Who existed before them? Are they all really living happily ever after in their new lives? Seriously, that world has been on my mind all this time, and I don't think they'll ever explain anything. The feeling I have over this is exactly like how PB&G season 2 will never be made.

| >>814511 even more questions show up when you realize the ending and the reason the show is called "Angel's Beat" which I won't spoil here of course.
It's one of those shows that doesn't answer you the questions, and it's fine because that gives it a pretty cool charm.

Also, the comedy is awesome

| >>814516 Well, it certainly does give it a sort of mystical charm, but those sorts of stories also come with it a sort of bittersweet taste that I don't tend to enjoy. If you like those kinds of stories, there's Haibane Renmei. I think some of the guys who made Lain also worked on that. There isn't much comedy or psychological thriller, but it's still pretty chill for what it is.

| I'm a big fan of iyashikei series. Little fan-termed subgenre for shows that can be considered relaxing, therapeutic, healing. Aria, Natsume Yuujinchou, Mushi-Shi, Haibane Renmei, all can be classified as such. My go to is Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou.

For pure joy, I go to comedies. The big one I freqeunt is Genshiken, because it helps me fulfill that dream of having a proper social circle.

| >>814575 Genshiken is also pretty much the only manga I've read that goes into university life, so I highly recommend it for those who want to read about what being in a Japanese uni club was like and the anime scene during the 90s. There's a sequel which centers more on an all-new female cast, one of whom is trans btw, who replaced the older, graduating characters and brings in a more 2000s anime cultural exchange.
Also, justice to Kuchiki, best boy of the entire series.

| >>814602 Hato is one of my favorite characters. I understand that some trans people found the portrayal to be pretty rough, while others found it to be alright. Either way, I would definitely say she's waifu material, and I'll take what I can get in that field when it comes to the historically poor representation (just in general) in anime

| If you want a show that will just make you happy in some of the best ways though, Aria bas you fuckin' covered. That was what I watched at the worst period of my life, and it was one of the few things that reminded me of the important parts of life.

| >>814565 haibanei renmei is so underrated, great show that i need to rewatch soon

I'm surprised to see so many people mention Haibane Renmei. It's an incredible show for sure, and one that's very special to me, but outside of the first few episodes it's not what I would call "comforting".

| >>814703 Next you'll tell me that the final volume of the GLT manga isn't the most comforting piece of content ever devised by man.

| >>814703 I think it's the setting and pacing of the story that does it. It definitely has moments that are tense, sometimes difficult. And I can't say it's the greatest show, from an objective standpoint.

| Are there any shows that fit this category from 1970-1999? I want to find more from older eras, but their internet presence tends to be sporadic, with a lot of great pieces going overlooked.

| >>814788 Sakura Card Captore probably fits. When I went back to watch it last year, I forgot how chill and relaxing it was to watch it.

| >>814788 I don't think the concept of Iyashikei was really explored during that period. Looking back, it felt like there were essentially three sorts of shows then: magical girls, martial arts, and cyberpunk dramas.

| >>814814 and mechas

| Don't forget Early Edge

| (by which I mean dark knights and ninjas)
Also, space.

| Nichijou used to be my go to. Simple high quality slice of life gag show.

But stuff that i have a familiarity with tends to do it. You're not there for plot points, there is a certain predictability to how it goes from moment to moment. You almost get a sensibility as to how the scenario writer formulates their work.

Have it in the background and occasionally look at it whilst doing other things. Like a visual warm blanket. Good shit.

| >>814933 That's a good point. Being familiar with a show takes away the worry, the stress, and the obligation to make sure you don't miss something. You can relax even more than usual (assuming you didn't forget the whole thing)

| >>814933
Nichijou is a good example, and so is Yuyushiki, but nothing beats Full Color's Sketchbook. More people should read/watch it.

| >>814973 I had that one downloaded at one point, but never got around to it. What's it like?

|

| >>814976
It's very slow-paced which might put some people off. If there's a show that's about nothing at all then this is it. Imagine a humourous take on Aria.

It's certainly more realistic than Yuyushiki and Nichijou, but it's similar in the sense that it's about that semi-outcast group of friends who tells in-jokes that only they laugh about. There's also a Canadian character who feels like a realistic portrayal of an exchange student which is cool.
