Tips on reading Berserk

| I tried watching the anime (the 90s one) and felt extremely bored by the flashbacks. Like, it's just a regular medieval narrative on a regular medieval background, as far as I could see.

But the "present", where Gatts is a black knight with a mechanical arm left me way interested.

So where can I start reading by skipping the boring part?
