Why do people hate Shinji?

| I am a pretty laid back, passive person similar to Shinji so I would think I would relate to him but I simply cant. As a passive person if someone tells to do something I do it as quickly as possible so that I can avoid a confrontation with said person. Shinji on the other hand is the opposite, if someone tells him to do something he has a mental breakdown and cries like a little bitch.

| I believe the tv show version of shinji is very different from the movies version. I really hated the endless emo moments of his and by the 6 episode it almost felt like filler. He has a lot to cry about but DAMN it takes long for him to do anything. Now movies are much more fast paced and there he has more of an angry little teen vibe that feels rebellious against obeying orders but can't really choose to not get in the robot.

| I don't think he'll be much hated if the audiance is the intended target audiance, aka (depressed) young adult with social issues. Even if you dislike him, you can sometimes understand what he did/ didn't do.
The problem is that people recommending the show to pretty much everyone. I've seen it recommended to normies that have only watched dragon ball/ jojo. Also wasn't it on netflix? When you go in expecting giant robot kid show, of course you'll hate him.

But that doesn't mean anyone needed to like him. Shinji is a character that we see grow as a person... But not for the better. He starts off as an insecure kid with social and anxiety issues, and then turns into someone that a therapist could write a thesis on. (Fun fact, I know a therapist that wrote a paper on his psychological issues for a course).
