and that was when merchandising was still paired with hand drawn, painted cel, well written and more realistically drawn and driven anime. People bought Gundam toys because Gundam was and is a powerhouse with more often than not fantastic story, characters, and writing.
as opposed to now where it is the amount of individual blu ray sales (themselves based on "muh waifu") that dictate an anime's worth.
| It's cheaper for studios to outsource to 4 guys with tablets and gimp and save all that sweet sweet money usually meant for production for advertising, merchandising, and securing idols as VAs then it is to run a 12-20 person studio of dedicated key artists and animators and thats fuckin sad because it really is a lost art (literally, as studios have largely sold or tossed that equipment and arent passing the skillsets along).
| I dunno man. Go back and watch like Disney's Sleeping Beauty. Watch Wicked City or Perfect Blue. Then watch literally anything animate after 2010 and tell me you dont see a stark difference in the style and atmosphere. Hand drawn art just feels way more organic, mainly because they actually still follow certain principles of things like squash and stretch (which has been pushed aside for rotoscope of all things)

1080p has to do with resolution and nothing at all with the quality of the art. If you wabt a more mosern example the phenomenal Redline os entirely hand drawn and looks slick as fuck.
