why do people act like madoka magica is the scariest shit ever

| whenever someone who doesn't know the anime asks if it's good or they should watch it people lose their shit like "bro it's so disturbing and scary you're not even ready bro it's insane!!" for no reason. i like the show but it's not that crazy. yeah it's dark and mildly disturbing but i bet i would've handled it at the age of 10. it's really way more tame than some people make it out to be and it's not even close to some other shows in terms of being dark

| They're literal children or normies, most likely both.

| Who are these "people"? Get better friends, op

by people i mean some people i see online occasionally

| While I agree with OP that madoka isn't as scary/disturbing as people said, I still don't think that it is wise to recommend new viewers to watch it.

It is arguably one of those "deconstruction" shows, which is better watchrd when your are well versed in the genre.

I watched EVA because it was recommended to me; didn't get it at all because I haven't watched any mecha/super robot shows. Likewise, if someone have not watched magical girl shows, they won't get the appeal of madoka.

Uh, what? I watched EVA without having watched mecha before, maybe except for a couple episodes of a show I don't remember, as Nd I understood it just fine. Likewise, Madoka was my first time properly watching a magical girl anime, and I thought the show was amazing. The stories in those shows really don't require you to have watched shows of that genre to get the story.

*and
not as Nd

| I don't even remember anything disturbing in madoka, apart from MAYBE that Mami moment

| These people are pussies

| Maybe the shock factor comes into work here. Yea sure, the show is disturbing. But, the first impression of it gave off otherwise, entrapping unwary audience.

| >>677417 wasn't talking about the story, more of getting what's special about the show compared to other shows in the genre.

I think you'll appreciate madoka more if you watch other magical girls show before and experiance how boring/slow burn/ formulaic they are.

Well, that's why I don't watch magical girl shows. I don't feel like I should need to watch something bad to appreciate something good. Like, I wasted my time watching 90 episodes of Naruto before dropping it. I don't appreciate shounen that I actually enjoy more than I would otherwise because I didn't like Naruto. You know?

| >>677961
I'd rather watch 90 episodes of cardcaptor sakura than naruto tbh

| >>678033
I don't wanna ever watch 90 episodes of something ever again, unless it's absolutely amazing.

| >>677961 not that you should watch something bad to appreciate it, more like you get more from it if you know what the show is trying to subvert/improve from.

Like how in old RPG games, you have a loading screen between fights, and nowadays, they make the transition smooth and almost unnoticable. Or how in old games, your goal is to beat the bad guy, and now it is more complicated; a few games make you fight your own party members and stuff.

| Plus, despite what I said, I don't think magical girls are a bad genre. It is just not aimed towards the likes of people who would watch madoka.

Episodic shows was the norm in the 90's and most magical girl shows at that time were made to be watched weekly and made for young girls.

| Seeing a magical girls show that has been transformed to be more appealing for a wider audiance just made me appreciate the show more.

Well, if you have the patiance to watch 90 episodes of naruto, then please give the same chance for HunterXHunter. It think that would make a better job of explaining the need to watch "normal show" before watching the "subverted show" than I would ever achieve with my limited English.

| Note: I know more and more modern magical girl shows have moved their target audiance to male otaku. Vivid Operation from A1 for example, but all they do is adding panty shots/ecchi/innuendo scenes to a normal magical girl show. That's just lazy and too little effort to transform the genre.

Another example: Magical Girl Site, is just mashing death game with magical girls.

I had the patience for it. But I stopped at 90 back them, and nowadays I barely have the motivation to finish 12 episode shows that I really, really enjoy.

| >>678240 Ah, okay. I get that, I was also burnt by shounen and stopped watching anime for 3 years.

Just take a break and give it a chance later when you have the itch to watch.

| I was burntout by shonen for a while but lately I've been enjoying one punch man and dr stone. I think the problem with most shonen series is that they are long for the sake of being long, though shonen isn't the only genre that does this. Basically if it has ran for too long the fatigue will come naturally. I've stopped reading one piece and has no plans to continue, but I didn't regret it at all and just move on to new series that offers something new on the table.
