FLCL and Elfen lied

| I think they don't deserve so much love. I think that FLCL is at least a decent anime, however Elfen Lied is complete garbage, it doesn't even deserve to be a classic

| Why not?

| I enjoyed both, but I can see how some wouldn't.

| When watching a classic that you weren't around for the release of, always ask yourself: is this a classic because it did 'whatever makes it a classic' first? What new ground did it break? What makes this a classic?
Some anime are classics because they are excellent. Some are classics because they were first.

| Elfen lied manga is better

| Since when Elfen Lied is regarded as classic? I've always had the impression that it is the "edgy boy's first anime".

| >>643401
This is my impression too. I've never heard anyone refer to Elfen Lied as a classic until I opened this thread.

And I'm still curious about OPs reasoning behind FLCL and why it doesn't deserve my love.

| >>643459 I didn't say it doesn't deserve YOUR love, it's simply annoying when people mention this anime as some kind of masterpiece

| >>643348
Until OP answers this, I will not contribute to this thread any further.

| >>643466
I'm still curious about why you think the show doesn't deserve the amount of love it gets and the reasoning behind it.

| >>643476 It's not like I needed any more responses

| People tend to overcomplicate the meaning of this anime, because the message is plain: "maturity" portayed by Naota. This theme is beaten to the ground by all western cinematography. The main plot is a conspiracy theory, which can be a good plot if only it wasn't made like it was, when you need to rewatch it many times only to find out it wasn't so complicated. The humour consists of sex jokes, japanese jokes or hyperbolic actions. I found all of this either disturbing or unfunny

| I see how people can like the combination of a light show with abstract storytelling, but the couch analysts are getting out of hands with analyzing every little detail and saying that makes this show a masterpiece. No, it doesn't, the show is supposed to light-themed, it consists of no heavy themes, it can't be so complicated, it shouldn't be

| >>643521
Thanks anyways

Find me a depiction of "maturity" that has been done with this kind of spirit, and beats this theme "to the ground", please. Sounds easy when you say it.

Japanese jokes are japanese (and not exclusively about sex or "hyperbolic" actions), so if you don't like/understand it, maybe you're not in the targeted demographic group. Which explains a lot.

And details are important, so you bet they're analysing details.

How is it a light-themed anime, btw ?

| Also can we go back and talk about the score maybe ?

For the life of me, please tell me you know of a piece of animation that does it this way, but is superior in your opinion.

It's not that it's deep and complicated and stuff... it's really not, and no you don't need to rewatch it to understand.
It's just that no one else did it this way... not that I'm aware of. And hell, this way was actually very refreshing to experience.

Also, who are these "couch analysts" you mentioned ?

| Yknow what I'm gonna go rewatch it to see if I can at least understand one of you points.
Please bear with me.

| Yeah
I understand that it's not a high art piece, but for me elfen lied is forever in top ratings. Just for one specific thing I can relate to very much. And yeah, there are shows that do that better, but elfen lied came up in my life in the right time and the right circumstances.

| >>643544 I understand, I'm not going to disrespect your opinion

| >>643539 First of all, you didn't understand. I was talking about how growing up can be found in dozens of movies. Like here https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.refinery29.com/amp/en-us/best-coming-of-age-movies They don't have the same vibes, but I wasn't talking about it

| >>643539 Second of all, it's light-themed because it doesn't have any serious scenes intended, it's made as a joke in a surealistc way.

| >>643541 I can recomend you Kyousougiga and Tatami galaxy. Obviously not the same anime, but I can see the similarities

| >>643541 Analysts are Staxlotl, Mother's basement, IGN and random dudes I saw praising the show, but can't name for various reasons

| And by the way, FLCL was made from bunch of ideas the creator had then put them all together and "made a purpose" for them. Same with EVA, that's why I hate both. Not my kind of things

| >>643554
Aren't those examples of yours made after FLCL? You can't criticize a 20 year old show for having a premise that has been "beaten into the ground" and refer to movies made in 2019 as examples.

>>643557
The only likeness Tatami Galaxy and FLCL has is they are both coming of age-stories. I fail to see any other resembles when I rewatch them over and over. One is sci-fi action and the other one is a drama.

| >>643561 Okay, I can still name before 2003. Ghost World, Rushmore, Boyz n the Hood, Donnie Darko, Stand by me, Dead poets society, The breakfast club, Almost famous,
Rebel without a Cause (even in 1955), Alice in den Städten... do I even have to continue? We both know there are lots of them

| >>643561 FLCL can also be considered drama

| >>643568
Donnie Darko, Breakfast Club, Stand by me... These movies are nothing like FLCL.

>>643569
Drama implies seriousness which you claim FLCL lacks though

| I don't think "Coming of age-movies has existed for years so FLCL doesn't deserve the love it gets" is a pretty non-existent argument.

| A good popcorn thread to read. Tldr: Elfin Leid sucks.

| Elfenlied was always a classic defuq? Just didn't see it yet

| FLCL is just "good" because old weebs get nostalgic about it. Same for elfenlied but ppl talked about it before it made them nostalgic
