SSSS.Gridman became one of my favorite anime, but I can see that became kinda obscure after the whole "HUUUUR RIKKA'S TIGHSS I CAN'T WIPE MY OWN ASS" died. And I'm here to say to you g/u/rls give it a chance. It's really well directed and one hell of a wild ride. A great story about isolation as the core of a fantastic tokusatsu tribute. Director Akira Amemiya really put his heart on it, such as the writer Keiichi Hasegawa. Also, Akane and Anti are both fantastic characters.

I started watching it but after a couple of episodes it hadn't really grabbed me so I never watched further. Does it get better or does it stay fairly similar?

Episode 9 (or whichever episode the dream one was, I'm pretty sure it was 9) is hands down one of my favorite anime episodes. You can really tell that everyone involved put a whole lot of love into what they were doing.
